Free Lunch with my Best Friend

You could have a free lunch with your best friend, too. Here is what happened to me.

One of my best friends and I were texting each other, just chatting really. We talked about enjoying being alone in our houses for short periods, why I examined the meat from the nearest BBQ restaurant, cleaning house (she does, I don’t), cooking meals (I like it, she doesn’t), and eating out with our husbands on Sunday afternoon. John was away for the day, and I had had a very light breakfast. I asked where she would like to go for lunch at that moment. She deferred to me. I chose a restaurant I had read about but not been to. It was The Chef’s Table in Waynesville (http://thechefstableofwaynesville.com). I sent her the link and looked at the menu. I chose the yellowfin tuna for myself and lamb for John, who doesn’t get it nearly as often as he would like. My friend was also reading the menu.

About that time I discovered the place is closed on Sundays and open at 5 pm other days. So you see, technically we met for lunch. It was free because we didn’t eat it. I want to do it again, taking turns choosing a restaurant. Oh, there is one other point. She lives 800 miles away.

  1. I have had coffee and lunch with my friends over FaceTime, Skype and Zoom, but I have never thought of actually sharing a menu. How fun!

          1. I don’t know about the restaurants there but I’d like to try an authentic American dish. Here we have the famous adobo recipe which is always a hit to visiting foreigners.

            1. We are looking for a restaurant to try the next time we go to Tennessee (the state just to the west of North Carolina). I might choose The Diner to meet you for lunch — https://www.thediner.biz/menu

Somewhere on that site is a children’s menu that Nate might like. I suggest chicken and dumplings for you. That’s a dish that is usually prepared at home, but this restaurant has it. Biscuit dough is dropped by the spoonful and cooks on top of a thick soup with diced chicken, peas, carrots, onion, celery and seasonings. It is a hearty dish, good on a cold day to warm you up.

            1. Yes. When I was young, my piano teacher wrote down how many times I should practice each piece or exercise. I’d race through them, and my family thought I would always play things at triple speed. Guess I still rush through things.

      1. Ha, ha, I am writing you and came back to find something to tell you and you popped up … the BBQ place that Evelyn suggested! Or Kate’s Kitchen with the country breakfast – yum!

              1. That was a beautiful picture Anne. I asked the father the next day about the drawing and he explained about the spray chalk. It is almost indelible unless a torrential rain comes along. We had rain and it was very humid and there was still an outline of Drew’s sun.
