I Love my Bed

I have new-to-me mattress and springs on my bed. The old set, which had come from my parents’ house, had seen better days. I now have what had been in our guest room. I enjoyed the sleeping for several months until I thought about the life of my bed. It was getting unfair usage and had no way to protest. John sleeps in a chair, so he was not part of the equation. I flipped the topper once a month so that it would get even wear. That did nothing for the support underneath.

My children laugh with/at me for stretching out and saying, “I love my bed.” It all started when I was recovering from knee surgery ten years ago. After being in the hospital and rehab, it was beyond marvelous to be back in my own bed. That phrase was a four-word prayer of thanksgiving. Daughter Lise and grandson David sometimes come in my room just to hear me say it again. In this tenth year, it’s more likely to be thankfulness for getting through the day in one piece.

Without meaning to, I was mistreating my bed. I still sleep on half the bed, and that half was taking all the responsibility – full weight, you understand – of giving me a good night’s sleep. How could I show my love for the bed? Turning the heavy box springs and mattress around regularly was beyond me. That’s why I now switch sides of the bed once a week. All three layers get a breather at the same time.

Switching is not easy for humans. You might not want to try this at home, folks. I need to open my eyes before turning over, so that I don’t roll off while thinking I’m on the other side of the bed. The phone (more important as an alarm clock than a communication device), has to be on the table next to me. It’s easier to reach from one side than the other. Since the bed is now several inches higher than before, I need a stool just to get in it. That has to be shifted weekly, as it also serves as a marker to remind me which side I should be on. So far I haven’t tripped over it in the daytime.

I love my bed.

    1. If it helps, my bed is very old. It was one of those regal four-poster deals from the Old South. Before my grandmother inherited it, someone cut down the legs, so it isn’t worth anything now. I love it, anyway.

      1. I did switch beds several months after my husband passed. I just didn’t need gueen when a full would still be empty on one side. So the queen went to the guest room and the full came to mine. Now any guest will be more comfortable.

  1. I love my bed too. 5 years ago we went to a place called the foam factory and bought 2 6 inch pieces of firm foam, queen size and a three inch, queen size, memory foam topper. Building our own was cheaper than buying a mattress and it is so comfortable. Even though we both sleep in it every night in the same spots it has held it’s shape/firmness. It was probably one of the best purchases we have made.

    1. I think it’s been about fifteen years since I rolled out of bed onto the floor. The temperature was terribly hot one night, so I put my head at the foot of the bed to get more air. I woke up mid-air and didn’t have time to dread the bump that followed. Amazingly, nothing hurt afterward.

  2. Now that I have that dumb wedge for my legs, it is not the finest night(s) of sleep I’ve ever had … sometimes I just curl up in a little ball anyway and defy having to sleep on my back which is necessary to use the wedge pillow to elevate my legs. It is then, just before I drift off to sleep, I think about the position. It seems a little rigid with my arms at each side (like I should salute someone maybe) and with my arms crossed over my chest, I feel like I have been laid out. Suffice it to say, this is why I’ve never been a back sleeper. 🙂

      1. I honestly feel like I am not getting my proper sleep because I wake up when sleeping on back – this is an unnatural way to sleep in my opinion … then I cheat a little … I feel this is not the time to get run down … our state jumped from two to twelve Coronavirus instances and now all the schools are closed down til 04/06 – I am grateful for working from home. Have they cancelled Nathaniel’s school yet … now that he is not in labs perhaps he goes to remote learning too, but he has his job(s) … they likely will close the cafeteria … he may be coming for an extended stay at your house.

          1. Yes, things are changing daily – my boss is trying to have the labor law class he co-teaches held at our office. There are only a few students, so otherwise he will need to learn how to Skype and they are night classes, one from 8:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

              1. Robb is co-teaching this year … the professor he shares the class with has an office in his neighborhood. They just have a few attorneys, small staff. He was going to have them set him up … it was not his week to teach but the other attorney has a conflict so Robb is “on” for Tuesday. They have classes for full-time professors and adjuncts to attend, but he is counting on them to set it up for him or learn this weekend how to do it. I don’t know why he doesn’t just ask our computer tech (Ron) to do it, however, Ron started our Windows 10 rollout last Sunday, was in touch with me Monday and Tuesday nights, then has disappeared again. I thought having it at the office made sense … it is just down the street from the law school and a small office building.

                  1. That’s true too – they don’t implement it until Monday’s classes … they still had in-person class on Thursday night. I don’t know how to Skype … I’ve never tried it out.

                    1. I used Skype with daughter Lise when she moved to Denmark. She walked us through her apartment, showing how everything was laid out. The last few years, we’ve just chatted on the phone without pictures.

                    2. I don’t think I know anyone who has used it – that was handy rather than having to make a long-distance call. I suggested he have Ron set him up or remote into his work computer and get it “started” for him. He wants to do a conference call since there are not a lot of students. I would not want to do it without having practiced on someone – hope I don’t have to be a guinea pig.

      1. Water beds were a lot of fun, Anne! They were warm in winter and cool in summer. A bonus when living in Australia. However, if there was a leak, or the heater was turned down too much, it was not pleasant. It turned out not to be that great for your back either, although ours had baffles inside so that did give you more support. Not many folks have water beds anymore. The constant heating of the water is an added cost. I love my new mattress but the pillow toppers are really hot in a sub tropical summer. That is when I miss the water bed the most.

          1. Hehe. I never thought of it as loyalty, but I suppose it was. There is still one remaining water bed shop here that I have seen. All the others closed down decades ago. That is the good thing about a water bed. You just need to renew the bladder – not the whole bed. More cost effective. And it is dust free. Which is why I was recommended to get a water bed in the first place. I had lots of allergies at the time.

              1. Yes- my allergies are much better – although one wonders if they change manifestation over time? I have worked hard to reduce stress in my life and being careful about diet helps too, I think.

  3. You really have me laughing. There is such love for this bed and yet it also causes you a lot of
problems. You should have slept in the middle. 😊.
I bought a new bed some month ago and loved the way I could not reach the floor when I sat on it.
( in spite of being tall) .
I have friends who bought a luxurious bed and she adores it, he sinks down to much.
Maybe futons on the floor is better???? Or are we too soft for that.

    1. I’m glad you like your new bed.

I didn’t want to sleep in the middle of the bed, because the mattress would soon have a big dent in the center. If I let guests sleep in it, a couple would find themselves rolling into each other. Motel beds often have sink holes in them. You end up in the most-used place unless you fight the mattress all night long.

  4. Love my bed, too. And switching is hard. One of our homes has a queen and the other a king. I’ve learned it’s quite important to remember where I am so I can factor in the size of the bed when rolling over. Haha.

  5. Isn’t it funny that we insist on one side of the bed or the other? I can see why after a time you had to flip the mattress. I wouldn’t have switched sides either.

  6. I would love your bed too- I would love all spring beds I think. I can totally understand wanting to give all sides of the bed even wear. It shows consideration for the bed.
Our school( college) is closed- for me- may be no return. So my comfortable mattress cover on my dorm bed is perhaps lost forever.

    1. Is there no one who could get it for you? Surely the room won’t be used again until classes resume. If only your relatives lived closer! They might keep your things until you come to visit in the future.

          1. Only the crockery – and my books- other than those, most can be given up- have been preparing to discard them for a long time now- also both of our houses back home are fully furnished- these things would only cause additional space occupiers there.

  7. Most nights, M.A. goes to bed well before me, generally 8 PM. It was prior to these times, a ball game of one sort or another that kept me up later. No Washington Nationals so far this year. Each night as she goes to rest her head on the pillow I hear, God, I Love my bed!

As for me, I pick up my latest read, “Outfox'” by Sandra Brown this week. I try for an hour but am not always successful. Gotta get that Internet Blue Light out of my brain you know. 1. I’m with Mary Agnes about loving my bed. You must not need as much sleep as she does. John can live on five or six hours of sleep, and I need more than that. Are there lots of cases of the virus in your area?

      1. Our county has 7 cases so far Anne. Easy to keep the Mega Centers out with the bridges necessary to get here. Much to be said about living in the country. You have your MT’s we have our H2O. Now I even have some Bach, thanks to John.
