Rituals of a Family Visit

Grandson Nathaniel always moves the mirror higher on the wall at the beginning of his stay with us. All others crowd into the photo. Spirits were running high.

On the way from New Jersey, daughter Kate and Nathaniel stopped at our favorite Virginia barbecue place and bought meat and sides for dinner. What a treat for all of us!

The two who had been in a car all day went for a walk, each joined by a sibling. I could hear them laughing as they came down the street. What a lovely sound!

Silliness erupted for a post-dinner snack. Nathaniel modeled a folded trivet.

Lise took the same trivet and balanced the crown on her head.

David is not impressed with the crowned one.

Part of daughter Lise’s success in losing weight was exercising, something she continues to do. She challenged her nephews to do a lively squat exercise. There was as much laughing as squatting. I went to bed when they decided to do planks. How much mirth can a body endure???

    1. Lise travels frequently, so she was aware of the flights that were likely to get off the ground. She almost missed her connecting flight in Frankfurt. We were all shocked at the empty airports — Lise on both sides of the Atlantic and we at the Asheville airport. They were like ghost towns.

      1. Good for her. I am still nervous about flying to Canada to see my family. The graduation and family reunion have been canceled anyway. I think I´ll wait a while before going. Sigh.

      1. Yes, but with the Lock down, my kids are confined to their respective states. My sister lives an hour away and with all we’ve had going on here, nothing in a few months. Christmas was the last thing we did and then my visits to Florida in Oct, Feb and last month. Some of my other siblings, both step and bio live in other states as well.

  1. My husband is much taller than me. Whenever we hang a mirror or picture, we always have a big discussion about what is the “right” heighth – and usually split the difference.

  2. Looks like an awesome visit, Anne! I smiled when you commented on hearing them coming from the street – I also get excited when I hear the cars of my family come in when they visit. This weekend was busy for us because they were over, and we had a good time, too.

  4. These are great photos Anne – I can see a great time and great food is being had by all. Nathaniel gave himself the day off from cooking (you too, but he had given you a shopping list as he was going to cook) … and the weather looks perfect too, for church, Father’s Day and family.
