Grandson David has loved trains all his life. When he was very small, he’d take a nap in John’s caboose as John pulled a train around the club track on Long Island. He is all grown up now and recently was the engineer of a friend’s train at the club in Tennessee. This is what I’ve been waiting for – a good photo that shows my fellows on a train. John was the conductor, sitting at the end of the train. A friend took this photo and published it in the club newsletter. Can you tell by their faces how much fun they were having?

Yes, you can tell how much fun they are having–what a great day for them! Some of my best early memories are riding on little trains like this, at the Fort Worth Zoo and Park, at Palo Duro Canyon in the Panhandle, and on the real ones in New Mexico and Colorado. Lovely post on a day when I need something pleasant to read about. 🙂

I’m glad you have enjoyed small trains. Our daughter Kate (David’s mother) was always involved in the train club.

I think that engine runs on oil. Some use coal, so there is a real fire in the firebox.

There was a train enthusiast who always brought his small dog to the train park in NY. The dog rode on the train for hours at a time. People thought it was so cute. I’ll bet folks would really be amazed if you did that.

Oh, yeah. I could do that. If a dog can do it, I can do it!!

I have always loved trains, big and little alike. One favorite wended its way around the Portland Zoo which gave great views of the animals(safely behind their enclosures.) I went off the college on the train and sent my oldest off on a train too. I liked the transition time between home and college the train provided.

How long was your train ride to college?

Four days. One leg from Portland to Chicago, then second from Chicago to Boston. I stopped in Chicago for two days to visit my grandparents meaning it took a week to get to school.

Wow! John would be jealous. He wanted to take a train from NY to Memphis, but the connections were poor by the time he was in college.

The East Coast trains deteriorated way before the West Coast routes.

This is such a lovely photo! I hope they had fun on this train. I remember when I was young I really liked playing with toy trains. When I was older I road on the heritage Puffing Billy steam trains here in Australia. There is something so enjoyable about a classic train ride 🙂

John and grandson David love trains. We’ve ridden behind a fair number full-sized stream engines, both on the east coast and in the Rocky Mountains.

A close friend of my son’s travels to see various trains to photograph them. He recently had one of his photos on the cover of a train magazine. Like your grandson and husband, this young man has loved trains since he was little. They are serious train enthusiasts!

I wouldn’t be surprised if John has that train magazine. He subscribes to several.

My friend said it’s Trains Locomotive Alco’s special edition. I have no idea what that is but John probably knows!

Yes, John knows the magazine. He has subscriptions to several, but he says he doesn’t buy the special editions. I was hoping he had it, and we could look at it.

Yes they both look happy and John is proud of his grandson with a similar passion for trains. I like their matching engineer caps.

That shot of my fellows on the train is the current desktop photo on our computers. It will probably stay there until daughter Lise comes to visit.
