Almost everyone’s Thanksgiving celebration was different in this viral year. We went to church via a recorded service, since there were no services in the building. There were no neighbors for dinner and only one special guest. Laurel, a friend from the church choir, was going to spend the day with her cat, but she agreed to spend the afternoon with us. What a delight she was! She brought liveliness and a party spirit to our table.

For the foodies: We had the basics for Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, gravy, dressing, homemade cranberry sauce, cranberry frozen salad, butternut squash, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, cranberry-mince pie, and Aldi’s cheesecake slices. I was lazy and did not bake the usual pumpkin cheesecake.

I hope everyone had some special happening for this strange Thanksgiving Day.

    1. This is John’s favorite pie, and I usually make it only once a year. I found the recipe for it when canned and dried mincemeat became so expensive. The filling calls for raisins, fresh apple chunks, a can of cranberry sauce, and spices.

      1. My brother brought a pumpkin pie. He picked it up (from a good bakery) on Tuesday. I think it was baked on Monday and by Thursday it was pretty dry and dull. We had too much food especially since it was 4 of us. Won’t do that again.

  5. Looks festive and delicious at your house. We ate with my son…it was a smaller gathering, not to comply with crazy regulations, but because it just worked out that way. Everyone looks happy at your table…we were too at ours.

  6. We had a smaller than usual Thanksgiving too, but it was still wonderful. My husband is usually in charge of making the pumpkin cheesecake but this year, he opted out. I made pumpkin pie (much easier) and we had birthday cake, since today is his birthday.

    1. I’m not sure my pumpkin pie is easier to make than a cheesecake. I should probably make the cheesecake tomorrow, since we are having several people here next week. Grandson Nathaniel is coming for several days, and two nieces are coming for a day to visit with daughter Lise.

    1. John and I have never had a Thanksgiving dinner alone. In NY our extended family would come, and there was usually a guest or so who had no one to celebrate with. There were usually 25 to 30 of us, so we ate in the church Sunday School wing.

      Cooking everything by myself took more time than preparing desserts for 30.

  8. Looks like a happy bunch of people with “happy plates”! Forrest and I visited a couple who were spending Thanksgiving alone. The food was great, and we played chickenfoot dominoes all afternoon. It was such a pleasant day for all of us. Forrest and I came home late and did our chicken and deer chores in the dark!

  11. Your cranberry-mince pie always looks so delicious Anne. That was quite a spread and a nice gesture to invite Laurel to your holiday table. She had a lot of conversation, good company and a full day and still got to cuddle with her cat when she got home (if she didn’t fall asleep from the turkey and trimmings first).

  12. Anne, how lovely that Laurel could join you in this most strangest of times, finding warmth together, sharing the light of life and giving thanks for just being! Next year I am sure will be one big celebration with family and friends for you all. The food sounds sumptuous and wow, the pie looks far too good to eat!   15. I love the lattice top. I have been reading a book on pie that I got from the library(before it closed again) and they showed a device that makes lattice strips. It looked very challenging to use and I am not sure it would be any easier than the old-fashioned way you and I do it.

  17. John has two sisters, and we all lived near his parents. With all our children, we started out with 17 people. Add friends who had no one to celebrate with, and the numbers rose quickly.

  19. Looks like a joyful thankful group. Combined with the yummy traditional menu I would say it was a grand occasion. We were quietly enjoying take home dinner for 2 but missing family and friends. Strange but true and we all vow to make up for it next time.
