DOG BITE!!

I was walking up my street and realized Angie’s dogs were loose in her yard. I stopped immediately and stood still with my side nearest them. The two dogs ran toward me, and one grabbed my arm and pulled backward. I think the woman who had let them loose is Angie’s sister. She has been warned that there is a leash law here and that she cannot let the dogs run loose. All she did was stand there and scream at the dogs until they went in the front door. She followed them and quickly shut the door. The dog has tried to bite me once before, but he didn’t break skin.

I immediately took a photo of my arm, then one with my arm and the house. Having missed a walk yesterday, I kept going. Soon Julie and dog Mickey came in sight. Julie commented that my hand was going to get cold, then she saw the damage. (I was exposing the wound to freezing air so that it wouldn’t ooze onto my clothes and get stuck.) She advised me to call animal control. As I came back, her husband Pat walked down his lawn and handed me a paper with the number to call. He has been menaced by both dogs who had crossed the road into his yard while he was doing yard work. He was told that the police won’t do anything until two incidents have been reported. Neighbor Bob stopped his truck when he saw Pat with me on the road, and both Bob and Jeff saw the bite. The dog had bitten Jeff before, but he didn’t report it. Pat insisted on walking me home, which was extreme but very comforting.

I called animal control and now cannot leave my phone unattended. The man took my name and number, saying an officer would call me. He advised me to seek medical attention.

Having called the proper authority, I washed my arm and sat down to write. Isn’t that what most bloggers would do?

Wound now cleaned and peeled

  1. I second these other folks–please get to your doctor or a clinic. Even surface disinfecting a dog bite does not get all the germs or bacteria out because their fangs puncture below surface. It isn’t fun, but Randy and I have both ended up in ER before because of a dog bite. One of my friends got a bite from her own dog and ended up having to having a skin graft. That old saying that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s is not true! Take care.

  2. Oh Anne, we are so sorry that this happened to you. Glad you followed up with Animal Control. We will be here in Onset praying you get a call back and get care for your wound. Love, Michele and Donna

  3. I didn’t want to like that one. And yet I not only like, but love the care you received from your neighbors. So glad you called Animal Control — especially if others were injured as well. You are potentially saving others from even worse. Please do watch for infection. We love you and this doesn’t need to get worse.

    1. The incident was over in seconds, so there wasn’t time to get frightened. Every house on this street has had someone accosted by that dog. The others were not reported, so I’m glad I started the official complaint about the dog. oxox

  4. I’m praying your wound heals perfectly, and that the situation comes to a good conclusion for all. Gel pepper spray by Sabre does work and is easy to carry on future walks. I can vouch it works on big dogs.

Oddly, writing about the happening was probably therapeutic and of course it was highly interesting! Who wouldn’t be lured in by “Dog Bite” for a title? 🙂

    1. I have had medical attention, and all is well. Thank you for your concern. I had to skip my walk the day before, and I wasn’t going to be cheated out of it twice. It was 31 degrees, so the cold was good for the arm.

  5. So, how are you now? Dog bites are no fun…having spent several months enduring puppy oopsies during teething. That one looks pretty ugly and painful, thank goodness for those great neighbors!

    1. Actually, the wound was not deep and not painful. I got off lightly, and the dog bite has now been officially registered. The neighborhood will be better off without that animal, but it may take a while to get rid of it.

  6. How frightening! I always wonder why people would keep dogs that are obviously dangerous. And of course you did exactly what most bloggers would do–start formulating a story in your mind. 🙂 That is really a nasty looking wound.

    1. I don’t know why they want a vicious dog. Could there be a valid reason??? I can’t think of one. The wound LOOKED nasty, but it was superficial. I’m sure my eyelids fluttered when water hit it for the first time today. The sting soon lessened.

  7. OMG Anne! That looks painful and scary! My mom once got bitten by a stranger’s dog as she bent down to pet it. But you! You were just minding your own business! Hope it heals quickly!

  8. I do hope you get better, but I think you should talk to them and see if they will try to restrain their dogs better. I must admit while I am not a fan of animals getting taken away. I do believe they should train their pets better. I do hope that you will be okay and that there won’t be a scar from what is probably a very traumatic experience.

    1. Thank you. The wound wasn’t as deep as I thought at first, and I’m in no pain. The people in that house won’t open the door to anyone. They hunker down until the person at the door goes away. People who don’t live on this street were horrified that the dog owner did not come out to see if I had been hurt and if she could help me.

  9. Oh no! I am I glad I saw that you got the bite looked at before I read this post. I don’t understand why people let their dogs run loose. I wish you speedy healing and the hopes the dog had its rabies shot.

    1. We think the dog is up to date on shots. Animal control is supposed to be checking. This woman has been told that we have leash laws here and that she must have that dog on a leash. We’ve all seen it loose in the front yard. Our real fear is that Logan will be attacked. Also, neighbor Joyce is going to have a toddler living in her house starting in November. We need to be safe in our own yards and on the street. The two dogs in that house have crossed the road and menaced the owner while he was weeding.

  10. Such a horrible story Anne- I worry about dogs all the time as I walk through the ‘hood. People started getting pit bulls and shepherds when our City was in dire straits about 8-10 years ago. Then the owners moved away, or didn’t want them anymore, so some of those dog owners leaving those pets roaming the streets. Others are guard dogs left out 24/7/365 and look mean and ornery and like they could clear the fence and come after you in a heartbeat. Your wound looks painful. Why don’t people obey laws with their animals? Grrrr!

(Yes, I smashed my finger in between the panels of the new garage door about three years ago and saw stars. This bruised my right-hand ring finger badly and it still is painful to this day if I put pressure on it. The next day when the bruise was a purplish-black I took a photo of it – difficult to do as it is my right hand and I’m right-handed and wrote a post about it called “X Marks the Spot”.

      1. I will send it in a separate comment in case it goes to SPAM … I have a ton of SPAM today! It is still sensitive. The old garage had wide spaces between the panels, so I just pulled it using that … never using the rope and I don’t have an automatic door opener. I have to get out of the car to strap the trickle charger on anyway.

  11. My goodness. Glad it wasn’t a deep wound but still, it was probably a bit traumatic to have a dog come at you! Can’t believe no one came out of the house to check on you. Hopefully the situation will be handled so that you can still take your walks. I’m glad you’re ok.

    1. I didn’t expect the dog to bite me, so that was a surprise. The woman was outside with the dogs, near the front door. As soon as the dogs were inside, she followed and shut the door. She didn’t care about me, just acted as if nothing happened. I have walked every day since. I haven’t seen the dogs, but a neighbor saw them outside running free yesterday afternoon. All the neighbors are on high alert for the biting dog. We are most concerned for Logan (12) and a two year old who will move in the house across the street next month.

      1. Oh gosh, hopefully it will be resolved before little ones are out and about. I’m sorry someone treated you that way. That’s not very nice. I always think about ‘treat others as you wish to be treated.’ Glad you’re still walking. Gotta catch all those fall colors. So beautiful this year.
