Good Neighbors and a Fake Turkey

When daughter Lise comes, we always try to see former neighbors Connie and Marla. We had a mother/daughter lunch in Bryson City, catching up on recent events. When the restaurant closed for the afternoon, we went to their house and laughed ourselves silly. We caused Albert to bark, but that’s better than having other diners glare at us.

It’s marvelous to have long roots with neighbors, as well as family members. Marla took a photo of Lise and me, a rarity these days.

If you are celebrating Thanksgiving, may you have lots to be thankful for – family, friends, a moist turkey, and sides that are not at war with each other. After all, you will be taking sides.

If anyone cares to share your menu, I’d enjoy knowing what you had for your holiday dinner. I was horrified to discover today that we are having fake turkey! I read the label in the store as “turkey breast”. Despite handling it there, putting it in the freezer and taking it out, I did not read the complete label. It’s a BONELESS turkey breast. That means turkey meat was mashed together and put in a mesh casing to hold it together. Next year I’m going to ask David to pick it out.

  1. I love that photo of you and Lise! I chuckled at fake turkey. I have often opted for a boneless turkey breast, but they were just breasts with the bones removed, like boneless chicken breasts. We are having ribs or pork loin roast–not sure which yet. If I do the loin roast, the weather will permit Randy to smoke the ribs Saturday or Sunday…hard choice, right?

      1. Because I’m a vegetarian, but I make Christmas dinner for my meat-eating family, they are always worried I’ll make a tofu turkey. (now that would be a real fake turkey!) Of course, I always make them a real turkey, I just don’t eat it. xo

  2. It will be wonderful! We are treating ourselves with filet mignon. There are only 4 of us so why not! We still have the traditional stuffing and sweet potatoes but will have cake to celebrate 2 birthdays instead of pumpkin pie!

  3. I want my turkey to have legs, too. I’m not a fan of white meat, so I like thighs and other dark meat. We don’t do big get -togethers any more. Carol is working at Life Banc, and they are very short handed now, which is a mixed blessing in that she gets really nice overtime pay.

  4. Love the pics and so glad you’re with family for the holiday. With us in a different state, it will be a little weird this year, but I plan on doing some FaceTime with them! Not sure what we will eat but we won’t starve!

We had our Thanksgiving a while ago. I do not know how many years that is without any Turkey?

            1. My brother and his wife are on their way to spend Thanksgiving with me. Today I baked a coffeecake and made a pumpkin pie. Tomorrow I will cook the turkey, prepare stuffing, and cook squash. Others are bringing a salad, a sweet potato casserole, and baked zucchini. I won’t have time to write for a couple of days. We will have a wonderful time together.

  7. Well at least it is turkey and not some weird plant based turkey! We are having turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and a green salad with fresh rolls. Pear cranberry or pumpkin pie for dessert.

  8. Oh, funny, but as others have said, at least it isn’t tofu, LOL!! I got a 12-pound turkey for 37-cents/pound, didn’t think there would be any real discounts on those this year. We’ll have it slow roasted with my sourdough/sausage/mushroom dressing, gravy, spinach casserole with parmesan cheese topping, cranberry sauce (jellied from the can!), homemade egg bread and a mixed berry fruit pie for dessert. I’m doing the prep cooking today, happily in the kitchen.

  9. That’s nice getting together like this and a great picture of you and Lise as well. My mom and I used to get a turkey breast to have for Thanksgiving or Christmas as it was just the two of us and white meat which we both liked. I have never cooked a large meal – going to make something in the crockpot which I’ll have around for a few days. Enjoy!

  10. We’re at Mom Pollock’s and had planned on having a pre-cooked meal from the local grocery store. But we accidentally missed the sign-up deadline so we’re scrambling. Forgot the pie, there was no lettuce for salads, they didn’t have cranberry sauce so we had to get actual cranberries, and we realized there are no veggies on the menu. But the turkey will be amazing, I think. Whatever it is, it will be great ‘cuz there’s a lotta love here. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you. We are most thankful for you.
