Family Flexibility

I have photos to show how flexible our family can be. Here is daughter Kate on a roll (or many rolls), always ready to join in.

Grandson David bends as easily as Gumby. Kacey is checking to see if he is irreparably broken. His feet don’t seem to be going the right direction.

I was amazed that David could rise from the floor without using his hands, and friend Karen in NY said she used to do that, too. Not to be outdone, Kate said she could still do it. They agreed to demonstrate the most difficult one with the camera rolling. Neighbor Logan wasn’t here at the time, but I’ve seen him do the impossible, too.

I’d love to know if any of you have done such amazing things.

  1. Tell David I used to win many bets doing this and challenge others to try and do it.
Ask him to try this………..sit down on the floor and get up using only one leg. My record is 55.
Oh,…you cannot use your hands btw.

  2. I was considerably more limber as a kid but never as good as Kate and David. What I always wanted to do was cartwheels and learn to dive. I finally got the hang of diving but have never been able to do cartwheels — and certainly not at the age of 81. I have always been a klutz — and hated sports. Always the last to be chosen for teams and I would have preferred to sit off in a corner and read, anyway.

  3. Anne, your post reminds me how I could easily get up from the floor (before a back injury!) – like your daughter and grandson. They have such grace and wonderful flexibility.

  4. Once upon a time this Timelesslady could bend and rise and appear flexible. I seem to walk like Frankenstein now when I get out of chair at night. I guess I am not as Timeless a lady as I thought I was.

  5. I bought the yoga tape and even bought some flash cards on basic yoga moves … I have no flexibility nor am I limber … walking does not help in that regard and sitting makes it worse. P.S. David’s moves do resembly Gumby’s.

  7. Great film of Kate and David showing how smoothly they can float up from the floor.
It is a good feeling being that ‘bendable’ . I did that a long time myself an taught my kids.
It is a good feeling to retain that feeling in your muscles and limbs.
    Well done!

    1. I wanted that video and kept forgetting to take it. Kate reminded me a short time before she drove home. I’m glad you could float off the floor and taught your children to do it. Generational knowledge was passed on. I taught my children and grandchildren how to taste the nectar from honeysuckle.

  8. Once upon a time I was as flexible as that AND I could rise from sitting in that manner as well. I suppose, however, if you don’t use it you lose it, right? I do, however, do yoga every day – which means I can still touch my toes since I do Down Dog/Sun Salutation regularly. But I can no long do “plow pose” (lying on the floor with legs extended over your head to touch the floor) because it gives me reflux. Sigh. Oh, for the elasticity of youth! 🙂

  9. This was fun! I could do the David pose when I was a kid, but that ship sailed a while ago. My knees and hips do well to even perform the normal walking and sitting these days. I could also sit and then rise like Kate and David, but I have not attempted it in years. I probably could be on a roll, however. 😃

  10. I have been so out of touch, have not written anything since March and have read precious little. I am amazed to find that there have been visitors to my blog, because there h as not been much to look at. I don’t know if you do this because you write frequently but sometimes I will set a title with a few notes or even a few paragraphs in the intention of completing it later. Tonight I decided to restart myself by deleting several of those and read and comment on some of your posts. so, it is a start and I thought starting with someone I consider a real friend might help me get going again. So you may see some random short notes from me from this evening pop up in your in box. Blessings, Michele

    1. I was delighted to see your name pop up. Thanks for reading so many posts. I haven’t written anything since daughter Kate went home. It was my intention to garden a little every day, but I’ve been struggling with an inflamed nerve. That’s what the doctor called it, but I think it acts just like sciatica. How I wish it was over already!
