The tour of Woodside began in the living room, and the first episode showed Rick with a cabinet that could be turned into a desk by lifting the lid and lowering the front facade.
The furniture carved by a family member nearly always had some secret compartment. Rick showed how the desk could be transformed further, introducing it with a magic trick. He pointed out that the carver had been through the prohibition era, so hiding liquor was a theme here. Please note that the family members were NOT known to be heavy drinkers.
Many old homes are reputed to have ghosts, and people claim to have seen one on the staircase at Woodside. A daughter of the family died of a broken heart and was buried in the grave dug for her fiance. Rick brought the drama to life, so to speak. After he made her handkerchief fly down the stairs into the clock, he retrieved it and brought it down to show us.

I really enjoyed magic trick # 1! That was so fun! So are these folks your family or friends, or this house was in their family and they just do tours, or what? Either way, it was a nice ending to a busy day! Thanks for sharing!

Rick’s sister was my sister-in-law. She was my brother’s wife, dying of cancer in her early 40’s. The families stayed close.
I’m sure Rick said when his family bought the house, but I don’t remember how long ago that was. I met Rick’s grandfather who still lived in the house, along with his son and wife. It was in the family well before then.
I think they have done tours to benefit a charity or so. The house is not open to the public. I just happened to have been there when family members brought guests who had not seen the inside of the house. Rick’s mother showed people around. She knew the secret hiding places in the furniture, but Rick has taken it to a new level with his showmanship and magic. Myra is always there to assist in any way she can. They make a wonderful team.

What a fun post Anne and that cabinet/desk/bar is amazing. What is Woodside?

Woodside is the name of the house, or maybe the property. The Henderson family built the house on their 4,000 acres. Most of the land was sold off through the years.

Rick keeps adding things to the tour. In recent years someone found a link to a famous pirate, and Rick now features that. They are fairly sure the pirate was a guest in the house.

My sister-in-law died of cancer many years ago. This is the house she and her two brothers grew up in. Rick is her brother, and he and Myra live there now.

I do not drink, not in over 30 years anyway, but I loved that the desk transformed into a bar!!

They pointed out that the furniture was made in the 20’s when people would be hiding liquor. Almost all the old pieces had a hidden compartment, most not big enough for bottles.

I hadn’t thought of that but it makes sense!
