I Didn’t Miss Much

Yesterday I had finally had enough of annoying notification dings on the phone. There were few things I really wanted to hear, so I tried to turn most of them off. They were canceled at the system level and at the app level. Many still got through that net. David offered to help, so last night he went through turning things off. It seemed like magic. Suddenly there were no offending chirps. Those few moments before I went to bed were very peaceful.

This morning was quiet, also. I woke up fifteen minutes after the alarm should have gone off. What I skipped was the morning exercise routine. I went out to walk at the usual time, to the accompaniment of constant notification chirps. When David silenced things the night before, it coincided with the night hours set to be silent from 11 pm to 6:30 am. I suspect my phone is a compulsive talker, impossible to stifle.

While walking, I saw a large worm-sized creature on the road and took a photo of it. The Lens app identified it as a milk snake, found from Maine to Tennessee and Western North Carolina. I thought it rather cute but would not be tempted to have one as a pet, as some people do.

  1. Yes, I know what you mean, been cleaning up my phone too to improve and reduce the amount of storage on my phone. I need to do the same with my Apple Watch because lots of the annoying dings come from it.
That snake I’d have left alone too, so it can continue to keep the area rodent free. ☺️

  2. Haha! That can be a problem turning off the alarm along with the other app notifications. I am okay with turning things off but am having trouble turning notifications on for some of WhatsApp family and friends. No idea what I’m doing wrong! The worm photo is impressive but really, people keep them as pets?!

  3. The snake reminds me of the plastic snake we kept around the milk bottles on the doorstep in England (to keep the birds away from pecking at the foil lids)… supppse that’s where the name “milk snake” comes from???
    No, I guess not 🤣

  4. I turned off my notifications because every time it switched towers it was beeping. Now it doesn’t beep at all, but I have to check my phone now and then to see if I have any text messages.

  5. Hello Anne. I agree, those constant lips and chirps are so annoying. Perhaps David could come back today and change it once again so that they are turned off all 24 hours. There must be a way to do that on your phone. Jae, a magical grandson, managed to turn all mine off

  6. Hello My friend Anne. I agree, those constant lips and chirps are so annoying.
I always turned off my WhatsApp notifications because every time it switched towers it was beeping. That snake I’d have left alone too.

  7. Do you have an android phone? Go to Settings, select Notifications, at the top select App Notifications. It will show you all the apps that are dinging you with notifications. Tap the slider bar to move it to Off on all the ones you don’t want. You’ll have to do this again every time your system updates. Hope that helps.

      1. Yes, I see a lot of roadkill around here – saw something this morning that was large, perhaps a raccoon or a possum. Too far away to be my groundhog that made a burrow in the yard by the house and the pest control place set a trap and it’s ignored the bait thus far (but a possum went into the trap and had to pay to have it relocated) … blog fodder like your snake.
