In Time for the New Year

Brother Bob and Beth came to spend one night earlier in the week, and they set up our family clock. They are moving to a smaller home and had already delivered the case. The first step was leveling the case. What a job! Beth leaned the clock back so that Bob could get to the leveling screws. After making slight changes, they pushed it back against the wall to see if it was level. I lost track of the number of times they repeated this.

This was the final measure. With the clock leveled and back against the wall, he used gloves to handle the weights and pendulum. The clock has a lovely ticking sound, and the chimes are marvelous. I am going to enjoy having it.

After that painstaking work was done, we went to Beach Mountain Diner to have lunch. I think Bob was demonstrating a fancy way of eating sweet potato fries. I always have lots of fun when they are around.

  1. The clock is beautiful. Almost as beautiful as the smiles in the pics. I love knowing that you will be hearing your happy sounds which will hopefully remind you of happy memories. Love you! Happy 2024.

  5. It’s nice as you can keep track of the time without having to look at a clock or watch now. I have to replace the battery in my chimes clock. I usually replace the batteries in the Fall and didn’t have any C batteries. I miss having it chime as I like to listen to the news the top of the hour and will lose track of time and forget to put the news on. You’ll have to video it so we can hear the chimes tomorrow and gong tomorrow night! Those sweet potato fries look good – I’ve never had them before. Happy New Year Anne!

    1. David and I didn’t wind our old grandfather clock after John died. It was too much trouble. This one is mellow and more accurate. We can turn off the chimes if we want to. I should try a video, but the camera’s microphone isn’t very good.

      1. My kitchen “schoolhouse-type” clock chimed on the hour and half-hour, but once when I was changing batteries, the mechanism fell out. So, I plugged the chimes wires back into the living room clock. My mom had me disconnect the wires from their “slots” as the two clocks with their Westminster chimes twice an hour would sometimes wake her up. Okay, I know you’ll be enjoying it tonight as it chimes for 2024. I have to stay up because there are firecrackers going off here until nearly 1:00 p.m., so no use going to bed timely.

          1. It’s especially bad here on 4th of July. The guy across the street may have cleaned up his mess, but I will see black powder ground into the cement and there are spent firecracker wrappers and cardboards on my lawn and driveway.

            I was in Denmark for Midsummer Eve and we were across from Tivoli Gardens on our last night of our trip. They had quite an extravaganza of fireworks. I took some photos of them from the hotel room. Our tour group’s rooms were fairly high up and our tour guide said we’d see more from our room than staying at the Gardens. It was quite a sight to see, but at least they manage the fireworks properly.

            It’s the amateurs I worry about. A couple of years ago I went down to Council Point Park the morning of July 5th. Someone was lighting firecrackers off in a metal garbage can and it caught on fire, exploded and was in pieces all over the parking lot. I’m sure the critters in the Park were terrified by that noise.

    I’m happy that you have the “new” clock! So glad they got it fixed up before the New Year! I’ve heard grandfather clocks can be quite touchy. Luckily, they knew what they were doing. ☺️

    1. I laughed, thinking that the clock wouldn’t betray me. My parents bought it after I was married and living in NY. The wall clock, however, has a history. My grandfather had it in his dental office, and it watched me play in the lab. My dad had it refinished when he moved the office, and it was in his home after he retired. It came to me on his death.
