Walking in the Cold

It was 7 F (-13.889 C) when I went out to walk just before the sun rose over the mountain. Rime ice had formed on all the trees at the top. Having not grown up with rime ice, I am fascinated by it and love to look at it.

I turned around and went home when I came to a long stretch of ice. Nearly all roads were clear in the area, but not this bit. I would have had to pick my way carefully and didn’t think it was wise.

The day was warming quickly. Four hours later the temperature had risen to 27 F (-2.778 C). I can’t say the house felt any warmer. I hope all of you are staying warm.

  1. Wisdom is a good thing when it come to staying away from an icy walk. Sometimes I have to go outside and come back in to realize the house is warmer. This old house is just hard to heat.

  2. I never heard of time ice. You were wise to go back, you certainly don’t need to fall and hurt yourself! A broken hip or something is no fun!
Do y’all not have central heat?

    1. Rime ice forms when moist air is blown by the wind onto bushes and trees. Elevation is critical for the lower temperatures. When you look at a mountain, the ice will appear above that horizontal line where it’s colder.

        1. We learned about rime ice from a furniture salesman shortly after we moved here. He exclaimed over what he had seen going to work, and we didn’t know what he was talking about. Natives take it for granted.

          1. We can relate. We have heat pump and it just cannot keep up when it is 0 degrees, but we just wear sweatshirts and use a throw if sitting. The water isn’t freezing and neither are we, so we count that a win.

    1. Only two vehicles went by me this morning. Lots of places close or have delayed openings when the weather is severe.

I have a very warm coat, which makes walking possible when it’s cold.

  3. Wow what a beautiful white mountain. All over looking white road! Wonderful! But keep warm 🥵 and stay carefully.
I never seen ice, here’s not snow falls. You have central heat!
    Tack care, Anne!

  4. The weather is wacky everywhere – I heard that 80% of the country was under an advisory of some type this past Tuesday, mostly excessive snowfall or that Arctic blast. Who knew you could feel like you were still in NY’s frosty wintry weather after moving south?

  5. Being outside in winter is wonderful IF you have a warm place to come back into. Stating the obvious, I suppose, but it’s the truth. Thanks for the peak into your icy world.

      1. Every year when I worked at the bank, HR would send out an email warning us about the dangers of ice, how to ice walk, and how to fall if we slipped on the ice. One of my coworkers slipped on ice on the steps and really damaged his knee.

When we were camping in Colorado, I managed to slip on icy ground more than once. Luckily, I was just left with bruises.

  6. I am glad that you are thinking safely as you walk. I have fallen a few times in past years and it has made me gun shy about walking in the snow even. But Sheba has to be walked so I watch my feet more than anything else.
