Snow Day for a Retiree!

The wooden deck had a thin coating of ice, so I suspected the road might be slippery. It was. I saw tire tracks in front of neighbor Joyce’s house and made a mental note to take a photo on the way back. I walked on the side, mostly on gravel or grass, to the big bend. That’s about half way to the stop sign. I got up the steep little hill and told myself I was crazy. Gingerly I picked my way across the road and headed home. It was dangerous out there! In talking with Shawn later, we figured those tracks might have been made by Bob’s truck as he took Logan to school. Public schools were closed, but his charter school was not. Here is the photo of the tire tracks looking downhill.

Joyce’s message was already on my phone. She wrote, “Morning, be careful walking! Schools are closed due to black ice! My school is closed, too.”

I replied, “I WAS careful and have just come in to tell you that it is treacherous right now.”

The woman, who was due to come at that time, asked to postpone cleaning for a week. Suited me! After a quick shower I called daughter Lise, who was watching snow fall after dark in Copenhagen. She showed me snow outside her window, and I discovered it was snowing here, as well. I aimed the iPad outside the window as we chatted. At times the wind would blow hard enough to make the snowflakes skid across the deck. My video, now discarded, did not show that action.

We talked for hours and had a meal together – breakfast for me and supper for her. Later she took a photo of Kacey and me to post on my frame. She is in an upper corner.

When Lise went to bed, I continued watching the snow while sitting at my computer. It began to stick as the sun went down. I hadn’t expected ANY snow today, so my White Day was a wonderful surprise.

  1. How exciting is that!!! I heard it might snow here,(maybe 1 inch) so I cancelled the LWML meeting I was running at church at 3. It started snowing around 10 this morning and has stopped around 4. It is SO beautiful!!! My only disappointment is that I cannot ski! Hopefully we will get more when my foot is healed. How special that you could spend that time with Lise. Technology has many good points!

      John $ was practicing with his new snowshoes in a park near his home. I’d like a video of that.

  3. I enjoyed this, Anne, especially liked the title! HA HA. Good plan to come back down and watch the snow from inside, both NC and Denmark! Being retired definitely has its perks. It was safe enough for me to drive up the road to Dollar General to grab a few items, and have a nice conversation with the woman who works there. Stay safe, and how nice you could dine with Lise! I hope she is recovering well!

    1. Lise is beginning to walk more without a cane. She is staying home, because it’s dangerous for her to be walking in snow. Tomorrow several of her friends are coming for a ladies’ day visit.

  5. Wow. Those tyre tracks look so dangerous. Glad they didn’t end in disaster. I have slipped on I’ve in Scandinavia. And it isn’t fun at all and leaves the muscles sore and achy. Then there is the possibility of breaking a wrist or leg…. The safest spot is inside.

      I’m glad you and your daughter enjoy long conversations. Lise is not working while she recuperates from a hip replacement, so we took advantage of that today to talk a LONG time.

  8. We had a freezing snowy week too but the most shining sun that didn’t make it any less freezing🥶especially in the morning waking the dogs but sure it was beautiful……back to rainy grey today😫

  10. How fun is that, connecting thousands of miles away with Lise with the same weather. That’s a great picture of you and Kacey. Black ice, the bane of a walker’s existence. I didn’t go to the Park today … too dicey and icy everywhere. They closed our schools last Tuesday and Wednesday and were closed Monday for the MLK holiday. It snowed Thursday and Friday but they didn’t close the schools then.

      1. I’m okay with cold and dry, but this ice and dicey roads are treacherous. I’m hoping I can walk again by next weekend after the rain from Tuesday through Friday.

          1. I hope you got out to walk Anne. I think Friday is a possibility for me, definitely Saturday. We had freezing rain today, most of the day, now two days of rain and 40s so hopefully it melts the pesky ice.

  11. We had a beautiful snowfall. I was just outdoors in it with my camera trying to get a photo of robins. I don’t know if I captured one or not. We will see… Sometimes that little dusting can be as slippery as ice, or worse hide ice. It is pretty though.
