May Day!

I don’t normally celebrate the first day of May, but I opened the waterfall this morning. As I write this, I’m sitting on the back porch where I can see AND hear it. John built it for me a year after we moved here, helped by grandsons David and Nathaniel. Two years ago brother Bob and wife Beth helped me clean the pools, as well as choose and install a new pump and new hoses. Last year Chris Pollock connected the new hose to the splitter. As you can tell, this has always been a family project. This year I spent a part of a morning raking the leaves out of the water, and another morning bailing out the pools. Today I checked the pump, filled the lowest pool, and let the pump fill the rest. Soon I will see if neighbor D.’s offer still stands of putting the decorative slates back where they belong. She is an enthusiastic volunteer landscaper and says she enjoys working with stones. I would never be able to do what she does.

  1. How lovely to hear and see the waterfall. Yesterday I posted on Facebook that it was the first day I thought was good enough to sit on the front porch. A bird, sparrow or wren showed up on the ledge and I sang it the first verse of a hymn, surprisingly it stayed for the whole thing. Glad you got to enjoy the waterfall, the community and the memories! Blessings, Michele

  2. How wonderful to have the waterfall working! I love being able to position the metal lawn furniture where it catches the rain coming off the roof–almost as good as a waterfall! We are still up and down with cool, warm, and hot days, but it will level out to hot soon enough!

    1. The temps here are not steady. Frost date for this region is May 8. It was the same on Long Island! I could remember the date because it was also my father-in-law’s birthday.

      1. I would imagine that would be soothing. A friend of mine had rain chimes and she made a video with her phone to send to me how peaceful it sounds with the water falling between the chimes. Have you ever heard rain chimes Anne? I’ll send you a separate comment of a YouTube video in it and you can just delete it after you listen. I imagine it sounds similar to your waterfall.

          1. How peaceful they sound … I like the sound for ambient noise. I tried the birds, but after a while you can have too much of a good “sing”. 🙂

                1. I asked for rain chimes, but I got steady rain sounds instead. I had that already today, sitting on the porch. Alexa talked to me, but I’m in bed without hearing aids and couldn’t understand her.

                    1. Sunday is a mad dash. I exercise, shower, wind two clocks, and skid into church online. After that, I have a leisurely breakfast. Do you walk on Sundays?

                    2. I like you saying “you skid into church online” … I seem to have lost my penchant for punctuality that I had when I took the bus. I always feel like I’m running to something at the last minute. Yes, I do walk on Sundays.

                    3. I start going to church on time, but I often have trouble greeting people in the chat area. This morning, in my haste, I misspelled morning. Felt like a dunce!

                    4. OK, see I thought it was Zoom. I stream PBS shows like that, so maybe I am cooler than I originally thought. 🙂 But you have a frame with rotating photos in it, so two steps forward for you, one step back for me.

                    5. I’m better with computers than other gadgets, but that said, I am still using the Windows 7 laptop even though I have the now five-year-old Windows laptop sitting on my glass stovetop with nothing on it.

      2. Anne – here are the rain chimes. I forgot how nice they sounded. I have it on now to block out the whining dog next door … it whines because it is alone which is 3/4s of the time. I have it turned up loud now and can still hear it).

          1. OK, see how you like it until you find someone who might be able to install one for you. My blinds are sealed shut so I can’t open my windows, so I wouldn’t be able to hear it as clearly as this video.
