Wicked Wisteria Wins a big thank you from me! I have complained endlessly about the invasive vine that has threatened me for ten years. Today I said thank you. That plant averted a great disaster. I was pulling weeds in the garden when Kacey suddenly ran through the evergreen trees with the wire lead and stake bumping along behind her. She desperately wanted to chase neighbor Joyce’s yard man on a riding mower. In my mind I saw her running at the man and having her legs chopped off. Oh! How awful that would have been! I was shouting at the dog to come back and then saw her facing me instead of running away. Several long tentacles of the wisteria had caught the stake and held it tightly. This was quite a distance away from the main vine on the pergola. They ran underground, past three huge evergreen trees, and up again, aiming for Joyce’s house, I presume. It took a full minute or two for me to untangle it. Kacey was docile as she walked back home, seeming to realize she had gone too far this time.

Between the vine and the dog, you get plenty of exercise and frustration! But I’m glad the dog is ok and still with you! I can’t wait to pet her again. 😃

Disaster averted for certain by that pesky vine turned Guardian Angel. I love this garden tale.

A big one for the wisteria…Bless the dogs heart.. I have to keep Babe in the house when working outside ..She doesn’t like yard machines running..she doesn’t like the vacuum running in the house either..she goes out for that..

So glad she’s safe. That could have been tragic.

Wow!
I’m so surprised to learn wisteria can travel underground like that. My dad has a wisteria bush and the blooms hung down but never went crazy. My dad trimmed it maybe once a year. He loved that bush. To him the flowers looked like bunches of grapes.

My wisteria needs to be trimmed several times a year. We had one bloom once in ten years, so I was not overly fond of it. I will thank it daily now for saving Kacey.

Good thing the vine was able to bring her to a halt

Yes, indeed! I’m trying to blot out the things I imagined.

The untamed Wisteria tamed Kacey and held her hostage! My neighbor Marge’s Wisteria would creep over the fence and strangle my Lilac tree. I’d have to unwind the tendrils at least once a week. It grew like a weed. Thistles are like that – they grow sideways. Years ago, the neighbor on the other side had Goldfinch feeders and she’d put in new seed and toss the spent seed over the fence – it was not all chaff, so I got huge thistles. I asked her to stop, but, I had complained about Sadie, her basset hound, baying at 4:00 a.m. . She/her husband started work at 7:00 a.m. and went out for breakfast first, so they put Sadie out early under my bedroom window. Guess this was her retaliation.

Your request was reasonable. What happened to common civility?

I know … and they didn’t have a garage and no driveway – it’s a small house and they’re long gone now, but they had a small shed in the yard and left it open in case she was out in the morning and it started to rain/snow. She went in there and howled and barked and the sound intensified. Thank goodness they were only here two years.

The vine covers a wooden structure, making a shady place to sit. I have a bench and a birdbath there. The vine sends out shoots underground, trying to expand in every direction.

I didn’t realize how invasive wisteria is! I admire the gorgeous purple blooms in neighbors yards… but now I’m even happier that they are in theirs, not mine. Good thing the vines stopped your pup!

Yes, avoid wicked wisteria plants! Mine has had ONE bloom in ten years. It isn’t like the pretty ones you have admired.

I counted it a miracle. I’m sure God knew when the first owners planted the wisteria that it would save Kacey’s life 20 years later.
