WW Wins

Wicked Wisteria Wins a big thank you from me! I have complained endlessly about the invasive vine that has threatened me for ten years. Today I said thank you. That plant averted a great disaster. I was pulling weeds in the garden when Kacey suddenly ran through the evergreen trees with the wire lead and stake bumping along behind her. She desperately wanted to chase neighbor Joyce’s yard man on a riding mower. In my mind I saw her running at the man and having her legs chopped off. Oh! How awful that would have been! I was shouting at the dog to come back and then saw her facing me instead of running away. Several long tentacles of the wisteria had caught the stake and held it tightly. This was quite a distance away from the main vine on the pergola. They ran underground, past three huge evergreen trees, and up again, aiming for Joyce’s house, I presume. It took a full minute or two for me to untangle it. Kacey was docile as she walked back home, seeming to realize she had gone too far this time.

  1. Between the vine and the dog, you get plenty of exercise and frustration! But I’m glad the dog is ok and still with you! I can’t wait to pet her again. 😃

  3. Wow!

I’m so surprised to learn wisteria can travel underground like that. My dad has a wisteria bush and the blooms hung down but never went crazy. My dad trimmed it maybe once a year. He loved that bush. To him the flowers looked like bunches of grapes.

  4. The untamed Wisteria tamed Kacey and held her hostage! My neighbor Marge’s Wisteria would creep over the fence and strangle my Lilac tree. I’d have to unwind the tendrils at least once a week. It grew like a weed. Thistles are like that – they grow sideways. Years ago, the neighbor on the other side had Goldfinch feeders and she’d put in new seed and toss the spent seed over the fence – it was not all chaff, so I got huge thistles. I asked her to stop, but, I had complained about Sadie, her basset hound, baying at 4:00 a.m. . She/her husband started work at 7:00 a.m. and went out for breakfast first, so they put Sadie out early under my bedroom window. Guess this was her retaliation.

      1. I know … and they didn’t have a garage and no driveway – it’s a small house and they’re long gone now, but they had a small shed in the yard and left it open in case she was out in the morning and it started to rain/snow. She went in there and howled and barked and the sound intensified. Thank goodness they were only here two years.
