For the last few months I’ve been obsessed with living an upright life – literally! I realized I am beginning to lean forward ALL the time. If you were watching me, you’d see me suddenly straighten up as I walk across a room. That’s when the mind kicked in. Just like my dad before me, I often lean my elbows on the kitchen sink when doing mundane tasks. With daughter Lise’s help, I am much more aware of being straight when walking in the morning. She and I would check each other and remind ourselves to keep our backs straight. Recently friend Margo told me her watch tells her when she should get up and walk. Maybe I need a watch to watch me and tell me to stand up straight. I’m certain I don’t want to be a slouch.

I thought maybe you were going to talk about falling. So glad you didn’t go there. Good posture can help in preventing that and a bunch of other physical problems.

Keeping our core strong is the key, but I work on that all the time. I also have to remind myself to stand up straight -especially when my back hurts so bad.

My habit of standing straight doesn’t work any more. It has gotten cerebral.

Our caregiver used to tell Mom “Nose before toes” when she was leaning forward. I catch myself doing it when I am not conscious of it, and then remind myself to stand up straight. Did you ever have to practice walking with a book on your head? That is how we were taught to stand straight when I was in grade school!

Yes, I walked with a book on my head. I’d probably stop and read the book now.

As we get older we all do it. I have to focus on it too but I often forget.

I need to do that too, when I straighten up, I can feel my spine lengthen!

I’m going to have to pay attention to myself going forward. My knees hurt from sitting… I should have gotten a proper set-up for typing at the kitchen table years ago. I’ve seen people with humps on their back as they are so stooped over. It always looks like it would be painful.

I thought humps were often caused by osteoporosis, not careless posture.

Oh yes, you’re right about that. I forgot.

I see a lot of teenagers and kids younger slouching. Mom never cut us slack about that growing up – she reminded us constantly to quit slouching. Crossing legs is another bad habit people have. Being cognizant and correcting ill habits can quickly change things for the good! Thank you for reminding us of this simple step to better health!!

Having written about posture, I am now more aware of being straight most of the time.
