Daughter Kate drove from New Jersey to North Carolina in one day. How she did it is beyond my understanding, because it is over 600 miles. She definitely takes after her father! The next day we stayed home for a low-key day, which turned out to be most productive. We began by walking to the stop sign.
Kate had promised to help me burn garden trash, and we were most successful! Daughter Lise had the green barrel delivered here, and friend Toke drilled holes in it. This was the fourth time I had used it and the first time the fire really took off. Flames were coming out of the top! Before we had lunch, we had burned all the clippings, as well as the top layer of the old burn pile. What an accomplishment! I was too busy to think of taking photos, but I did get a quick video of Kate as she checked the fire.
We kept an eye on the barrel from the house as the fire died down. It was wonderful to have it so contained. The next morning the rim was cold, although there was a bit of heat rising from the bottom. There were only about two to three inches of ashes, which I’ll empty next time.

Nice to see that Kate is there and that you got lots done already. A burning barrel is important. My dad always had one. Enjoy your visit.

Burning barrels are new to me. I’m happy to have had a really good burn this time.

I’m so glad Kate is home to help you with this job. Just a suggestion, but it would be handy to keep a bucket of water handy in case you ever need to douse the fire, and if you can get some fireproof gloves/gauntlets in case you need to be close enough to feed the fire or place the top on the barrel mid fire to starve it of oxygen.
Have a lovely visit together. Huge Hugs from Wales.

It amazes me the people who drive long distances in a day. My friends routinely drive straight from Florida to New Jersey and I just shake my head

I couldn’t drive all day, even when I was young.

I can’t ride for more than 2 hours without my bottom aching! Oh to be young again! A long time ago, I borrowed a neighbor’s barrel to burn a rose hedge I had taken out. (It was nasty and ate my clothes every time I mowed the grass next to it.) I remember what a hot job that was. Now the townships around here have banned it. Looking forward to your Kate stories!

One time I put the big Sears catalog in burn barrel. It took days to burn.

Feels good to get stuff done, Tim has burnt old documents at times easier then putting them all through the shredder

I’ve been using shredded paper to get the fire started.

That is a lot of miles in one day and driving solo – wow! Driving door-to-door from our house to my grandmother’s house was just 240 miles, a four-hour trip and the last half hour was three or four different expressways and that part wore me out and I needed a nap when we got there. I just did City driving and that’s all I do now.

Kate corrected me and said her drive was over 700 miles.

Well that makes it all the more incredible – no wonder you said Kate takes after John. I can remember you seeing he would make long trips without a break/stopover as well!

That would invigorate her a bit – otherwise it is easy to fall asleep from the monotony. I would have my mom beside me driving to my grandmother’s house and until that last half hour, my eyes would run together from watching the white stripe in the road, endless miles with just grass or cows, nothing to see. I am just amazed at 700 miles in one day – wow!

That is a long drive for Kate. I have driven from my part of southern NJ to High Point, NC. That usually took between eight and nine hours, depending on traffic around Washington and Richmond, and how many stops we make. Have a wonderful visit.
