I don’t remember numbers well, so I can’t say for sure how much a half gallon of milk cost two days ago. I think it was about $3. A hand-lettered sign on the door of the milk section said a half gallon of 2% milk was $1!! Curious, I looked at the sell-by date. It was the next day! No wonder it was so cheap! I debated with myself whether to take a chance on it or not. Miser Me won out, and I put it in the cart. If it begins to turn, I’ll quickly use it in cooking.

I would have grabbed it as well. It can always be used. Some things are better with sour milk like pancakes and coffee cake.

If you hadn’t gotten it I would. Cook with it. You still win!

You’ll find a way to use some or all of it – for $1 it’s a bargain even if some goes down the drain!

Just fyi, during the height of the pandemic, when food supplies were iffy and we didn’t want to go to the stores as much, we started to buy lactose-free milk. It lasts much longer than regular milk (not sure why). Even though we aren’t lactose-intolerant, we have continued to buy it. So, if you ever see a carton of that on sale, go for it! 🙂

Smart gal you are.My neighbor taught me to by milk by the gal. And freeze it in quart jars..Of course it takes a while to thaw out so a need to remember before I need it.

That’s a great idea. I don’t have room in my freezer for quarts of milk.

Does your milk have a use by or a best before date, ours says use by but I can remember when it was best before which is more accurate in my opinion because milk can be fine for a couple of days after the use by date. I remember mum explaining to my brother that with milk you don’t just tip it out because it has reached its use by date, you smell and if needed taste it first as often it will be fine the next day, she told him to use a little bit of common sense.

The milk had just a date. I don’t think it could be sold after that date. Feta cheese has “use by”, and yogurt has “sell by”. I try to use common sense.

The milk I drink has a “best by” date on it. I’ve drunk it up to a week after that date and nothing bad happened …

Same with me. Once in a while, particularly in summer, I’ve had milk go bad before the date on it.

You’ll be fine. Worst case scenario is that you have some pudding for dessert!

At least you could find 2%. Around here it’s as rare as can be and I don’t know why.

I usually get 1%, and that is sometimes not in stock here.

I see buttermilk biscuits (with a side of sausage gravy) in your future. 🙂

It just had a date on it — yesterday’s date. The milk could last a day or a week. We’ll see.

I’d have bought it too. Creamy soup, biscuits and puddings would use it up in a hurry. Yes, milk freezes well!! I often freeze what milk is left when we go out of town for a while. Just give it time to fully defrost and then shake well as the solids and watery whey will sometimes separate.
