Neighbor to the Rescue!

I was aware that something was making a sound that repeated at regular intervals. Walking around the bedrooms, I stood under a smoke alarm as it chirped. Thankfully, I couldn’t really hear it from my bedroom without hearing aids. What a plus!

I had already bought the batteries for the 5 alarms in the house and had asked daughter Lise and friend Toke if they would replace them for me in the middle of the month. I couldn’t remember when David last changed one in the middle of the night. It could have been one year or two. There are ads every year to change these batteries when the clocks change, and I have now decided that would be a good idea. Meanwhile, I couldn’t wait two weeks with that racket going on. I fetched the ladder from the garage and had a new battery on it.

Seeing Jeff come home on his motorcycle next door, I texted him to see if he could change one. He was here in two minutes. He let me watch the process, which was very easy. He simply opened a little door, replaced the battery, and closed it. On his way out, he reached an alarm in the hallway and could have replaced that one without a ladder! He is quite tall, so that wouldn’t work for the rest of us. Daughter Kate is driving here today, so she and I will change any battery that chirps, otherwise I’ll wait for Toke. I keep writing that I have the best neighbors in the world, and this is another tale to prove it. How thankful I am to live among these people!

  1. It’s a funny coincidence; we had a spare smoke detector start beeping last week, too. It must be the week for beeping smoke detectors. Since it was a spare, I couldn’t find it. Finally, I was in the basement, it beeped, and I pounced on it. It was on a shelf out of sight. It is now in the garage, hopefully disabled.

  2. They always chirp at inopportune times. A few years ago my carbon monoxide alarm went and when it goes, it means you have to get a new unit. It would not stop chirping and it was right after I damaged my finger in the garage door, so I could not even see if I could play with it to shut it off as my finger was still swollen, so I put it outside then thought a passerby might wonder what it was in the dark and It was already dark. So I called Jeff to say not to be alarmed (yes punny) and he came and got it and put it in a bucket of water … it was end of life for it anyway, but it kept merrily chirping away for a long time in his garage under water.

  3. Anne, you sound very organised indeed with all your smoke alarms. That beep of the alarm as the battery runs low is annoying and does ensure we replace it quickly. It’s great you have such lovely helping friends – especially tall ones! Now that my son no longer lives at home (he is six metres!) it means I (or my husband) have to clamber on a chair! Wishing you a very special time with Kate home.

    1. Our ceilings are high, so a chair wouldn’t get me to the smoke alarm. I hope we can wait for Toke to get here, but we’ll handle things if we have to. How thankful I am for loving, responsive neighbors!
