Thanksgiving 2024

We had a great Thanksgiving celebration, although there were only three of us. I took one photo. Toke was at the stove, and I asked Lise to stand with him. He was making a Danish dish which translates as Brown Potatoes. That is a humdrum name for something I would describe as fancy caramelized potatoes. He boiled the small potatoes the day before, and I think he peeled them then. The next day he browned them in butter and sugar, shaking the pan from time to time. The result was marvelous.

For the foodies – our menu included roasted turkey breast, stuffing, gravy,Toke’s potato dish, green bean casserole, acorn squash filled with spiced apples, Connie’s grape salad, pumpkin cheesecake, and pumpkin pie.

Because Toke’s airplane was too late to make the connection to Amsterdam, he spent an extra night here. That gave us enough time to finish the annual family jigsaw puzzle. Blogger Linda Schaub (Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy) chooses photos from my blog and has them made into a puzzle. Her choices are superb, showing people closest to me throughout the year.

  1. That sounds like quite a feast from first course to dessert. Toke is quite the cook it seems. I had a crockpot meal, but managed to put in a layer of Stovetop Stuffing on the bottom and Durkee Fried Onion Rings on top, plus green beans and mushroom soup, along with the rest of the veggies, so it was like a variation of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. I hope Toke’s flight home worked out better … his flight to the States was messed up too as I recall, didn’t the luggage went elsewhere? The puzzle looks great put together Anne – how can you miss with such photogenic subjects!!

    1. Thank you so much for the puzzles – you’ve given us so much joy!

Yes, you have an excellent memory… Toke arrived via Newark and Charlotte (instead of Amsterdam and Atlanta, as booked), but his luggage ended up briefly in Dallas, TX 🤷‍♀️

      1. You’re welcome. I’m happy to do this Lise. Your mom enjoyed the first one so much, I will keep up this holiday tradition. My mom loved to do jigsaw puzzles. I wish I could have done this with both of us in the puzzle. I thought Toke had a roundabout trip, not only him, but his luggage as well!

      1. That’s rough when you have a connecting flight – you miss it and you have to hope they can reschedule you. In his case he was lucky to return to your house, where others would have to get a hotel room or spend the night inside the airport.

  2. Anne, the jigsaw puzzle is a wonderful and just shows the love of all those around you! Toke’s potatoes sound delicious and a version of a Swedish dish. So glad you had a special Thanksgiving. Xx

  3. We don’t have a Thanksgiving Day here. we think we are so lucky to live here that we give thanks every day. I was intrigued to hear Green bean casserole. I never heard it and so I looked it up on our friend Mr. Google and learned that it was devised in the Campbell soup Kitchen in 1954 by Dorcas Reilly. The recipe was shown on the can of cream of mushroom soup and rapidly became a family favourite in the USA. It’s amazing what you can learn reading other bloggers posts. I will try it as a side dish very soon, thank you for bringing it to my attention.I will try it as a side dish very soon, thank you for bringing it to my attention.I’m so glad you had a fantastic day and I will try the potato recipe soon. 1. I’m impressed that you looked up the origins of the green bean casserole and for the recipe. Daughter Lise requested it. If I remember correctly, the recipe called for canned green beans, but I always used frozen ones. You can cook them as crisp or limp as you prefer.
