Brother Bob and Beth drove me home after I’d spent five days at their house. Although the day was cold, it was clear and sunny. What a pleasant drive it was! I didn’t pay attention to the time, but I think it takes about three hours one way. I quickly made a tuna casserole, heated frozen vegetables, and cut up an apple. Eating gave them a chance to relax a little before making that long drive home.
I don’t remember how we got on the subject of ceiling fans, but I learned something I didn’t know. Fans have a switch so that you can change the direction from clockwise to counter-clockwise. I must be the last person on earth to find that out. Going counter-clockwise is best for hot weather, and going the other way helps in cold weather. Before we got here, I had already decided I’d rather have the fan set for hot weather. I’m not really enthusiastic about having a fan stirring the air in the winter. While I put lunch on the table, Bob checked all the fans by turning them on briefly. Every one was set for summer. Good! We walked around the house and spotted the switches just for the fun of it.
What a wonderful visit had had with them!
It’s always nice to come home after a wonderful trip. Hope their drive back was uneventful too.

That was a nice get-together with family over the holidays. I have heard that about the ceiling fans. I don’t have one though.

Many homes in the South have ceiling fans. We would never have thought of installing them if they hadn’t already been here.

That makes sense – A/C must cost a fortune with seasons having much warmer weather than we get here.

Yes, my mom told me that back in the Summer of 1936, North America had a heat wave that lasted two weeks. They had one small metal fan in the house and there were three of them gathered around it. At night, Mom and my grandmother slept on the porch every night and my grandfather went down to Sunnyside Park on Lake Ontario with a pillow and blanket, along with all the neighborhood men, so they could get a good night’s rest. The men and many women all worked in hot, non-air-conditioned factories during the day.

It’s hard to imagine that.

I can’t either – she said it was unbearable. My grandmother worked in a Rowntree’s chocolate factory and a Planter’s Peanuts factory but I don’t know if that was before that time.

I only found out about the fan switch last year! So don’t feel bad.

The technology moves so quickly and as we get older, we are no longer immersed in it as we might have been via the workplace, so it seems natural that we lose touch a bit with the new fangled gadgets – plus there are just too many apps to keep abreast of.

There’s actually a trivia card game out there called “I Should Have Known That!” I got it for my nephew and his wife for Christmas. 🙂

I’m so glad you are able to spend time with family and it’s a good time! I did know that about ceiling fans. Here comes a confession … the first time we hit the switch to run the fan in the opposite direction, it threw dust all over the kitchen! How did all that dust hold on in one direction but not the other. I dusted more frequently after that. Lesson learned. 🙂

Thanks for the warning. It makes me more determined than ever to not change the direction of mine.
