I was putting clean dishes on the middle shelf of an upper cabinet when one large plate rolled forward and fell to the floor. It was a plastic plate and didn’t break! I was mentally processing that, with eyes searching the board for the cause. One peg had failed, tilting everything forward. Amazingly, the board rested on six Corelle plates, upright in a rack. I gently removed all the dishes on the shelf and temporarily stored them in a bottom cabinet. Getting a new peg would have to wait, because I was in the middle of exploring a new laptop.
The old laptop was getting more unreliable by the day. The storage was almost full. It never had enough to space to begin with and was certainly not improving. Knowing the Windows 10 system was on the way out, I opted to spend Christmas gift money on a Windows 11 machine. I’m using it to write this. What a joy it is! The transfer was quite easy, probably because I already had OneDrive on the old one. It took over all my files and many settings. In a few days I’m going to see if it has room for all my permanent files currently on the old desktop. A bonus was setting up a connection with the telephone. I can type text messages that will be sent out by the phone, and I think I can now transfer photos from the phone directly to the computer.

It is always good when things work out! Thank goodness you did not lose any dishes! OneDrive is really helpful, isn’t it? Randy just put it on my computer, but he has used it for a long time. My biggest issue is I am still using Mac desktop, but switched to android phone, which I love. My next computer will probably be a PC–it is just easier when things are meant to work together! I hope you have a good weekend!

You were so lucky to only have one plastic plate fall out. I read a thread once where people were sharing their stories of shelf failure and the resulting crash and loss of many plates, bowls, and glasses. My apartment cupboards aren’t of the highest quality, and I kind of always have that worry in the back of my mind.
Good for you updating your computer and being savvy enough to know how to set it up and use it the way you want. I’m impressed. 🙂

I was very lucky that no plates were broken. I’m just now thinking what an awful cleanup job that would have been.
I’ve used computers since the early 80s. Being a secretary in a small office required heavy computer use. There was no one to troubleshoot my home computer, so I always had to figure out how to fix it. I think the process of moving to a new computer has become simpler.

You are always so high tech Anne. That is interesting that you can type messages sent out by your phone and your phone photos to the laptop. You are ahead of me as to the phone. I thought I was pretty cool when I typed on my keyboard to send text messages to my boss. 🙂

I read about things and then try them. I have not yet set a photograph directly from my phone to the computer, but I’ll get to it in a few days.
That is great that you could type text messages to your boss. What a time saver!

I am sure you will … I like Windows 11 more than Windows 10, but I still have some more things to learn as I’ve not even explored Copilot yet. I got a new wireless mouse and wireless keyboard … the different keyboard with the numeral toggle button where the backspace is has taken some getting used to. When he traveled in different time zones and especially out of the country, it was more efficient and he subscribed to so many things (non-work-related stuff and catalogs he ordered from, it was difficult to sift thru all that, so I could just condense anything important to a text).

I am glad it’s over too and moving things back and forth from Windows 7 to Windows 10 and then Windows 11 took a lot of time. I wonder why I never get my house in order?

I am glad you did not get injured with the shelf issue. I fell from a chair the last week at Mamas.’ removing dishes. . .and I had to get a new computer! That has been a chore for me. I hope we both have smooth sailing ahead! beloved Michele

Falling is dangerous! I am glad you are still ambulatory. Isn’t it amusing that both of us were dealing with dishes and a new computer?

You’;re cerrttainly not a technophobe like me Ann. Thgough I’m usaing a PC with Windows 11 and love it, there are times I have to threaten it with the window. Huge Hugs

I have not threatened my computer yet, but it could happen. Last night I could not turn it off! I had no idea it would need a different process. I just closed the top and let it sleep. Huge hugs!

I’m glad it went so smoothly for you. We recently switched to iPhones. In some ways the transition was easy but there are some frustrating things along the way. Yesterday found me screaming at it!

The only Apple product I have is an iPad. My logic does not match its logic. I fumble with it almost every time I pick it up. Looks like I would learn eventually! Good luck with your iPhone.

How true that is! I have been there when technology was not amazing. I’m glad I was not the kind to tear my hair out over a problem. If I had been, I would have no hair left.

So glad you didn’t have dishes all over the floor. Mine are in an old pie safe that isn’t stable so I do understand..yes I too need a new laptop but keep putting the decision off.

It’s good the plate didn’t break and somewhat annoying that the shelf collapsed.
It can take a while for one to get use to a new computer, thankfully many things are the same

I found the peg was not broken, either. I must have dislodged it when changing the dishes. I simply put the shelf back in place, and it’s fine now.

I was lucky. I had dislodged the peg, and it was easy to put the shelf back in place. I will be very careful not to lift that shelf again.
