Sharing Silence with Frog

For the past several weeks I’ve shared quiet mealtimes with Frog. This is the view I have of his sitting on a flat stone. He doesn’t mind my moving about on the porch, as long as I don’t go near him outside.

A cute little chipmunk scurried up the stones on the right of the waterfall. I was surprised that there was movement to the left of the water. Although I did not see the action clearly, I thought another frog jumped into the lower pool from above. That took me by surprise, because I had seen only one frog up until then. As I ate, I kept my eyes looking toward the waterfall. Suddenly a frog jumped from the water to the stones above, where she disappeared instantly among the plants. Of course, I have no idea of the sex or relationship of the two animals.

I went outside and down the steps, moving as quietly as I could. Zooming in, the camera caught the frog, still sitting there. He seemed comfortable with that, staying in place after I returned to the porch. I didn’t see the second frog again, but I will certainly be alert for any movement near the water.

Comfortable with silence

  1. I like your froggy friend. I have not seen any in a while here, but usually there are 2-3 small ones near the damp places…which lately, could be almost anywhere! The way the stones surround your waterfall is a perfect place also. I keep thinking about putting in some kind of water feature for frogs.

    1. John built the waterfall almost 8 years ago, and this is the first time frogs have hung out near there. I’m nervous about cleaning leaves out of the pools, because I think it will scare the frogs away. I can’t run the waterfall without cleaning the water.

  6. Cute! At least it’s not the same noisy dude from last summer… that was too loud (plus it was too small and we never could spot him)

  7. Oh, isn’t it so fun to observe the wildlife and natural happenings? I had a toad in the garden the other day. I moved him or her because it was in a bad place in my fenced garden, but what a fun little buddy. 🙂

      1. Last fall a package was sent to my old address in error. The new folks were kind enough to reach out to me to pick it up. I got to see the home and yes, they kept the pond because they love the frogs.

    1. Where I grew up in Tennessee (a Southern state), there were always frogs in the farm ponds. People did eat frog legs and considered it a delicacy.

  10. Frogs are cool. Our previous house had many frog and toad friends, but here not so much. I’m almost jealous of your friendship.

  11. Aren’t they fun? We once had a plastic baby pool for our dog to cool off in and a frog or two took it over..Tadpoles are fun to watch grow..

  13. Well, that is a fun find for the yard – I never saw any singing frogs this year and was bummed out about that as they were so vocal and made for a fun post.

      1. I went looking for them after I saw all those in a sunken portion of Elizabeth Park, just a lot of rain caused a pool and there they were – nothing this year. We had cold weather going on for too long though – they were afraid to come out. Maybe your flooded areas had something to do with your frogs.

          1. I hope you get to see more of them. A friend of mine used to get those cute, bright-green, tiny tree frogs and they liked to go into her porch planters which had tall plants. They would sun themselves there all day.

  15. Well, how cool is this! That’ a good-sized frog, too. I think I’d like “frog watching” as well. Your pond area is lovely. You are fortunate to have this. 🙂

    1. The frog is not very big. It’s only about two and a half inches long.

      I love the waterfall in the backyard. Husband John and our two grandsons installed it. It had fallen into disrepair after John died, but I was able to get it going again with the help of neighbors. Right now I need to clean the leaves out of the pools, but I’m afraid the frogs will leave if I do that.

  16. they are a rare sight here nowadays but growing up I remember we had a family coming over summer and hanging around the garden. The cats were going a bit mental but the froggies were quick clever jumpers
