I have written a letter once a week to a friend who can’t get electronic messages. I cheat by including blog posts, only adding personal news at the end. It couldn’t be easier. Sometimes, though, I make it much harder for myself. It happened this week. I spent a lot of time talking to people and realized at midnight that I hadn’t prepared the final part of the letter. The next morning I woke at 6:25, half an hour before the alarm would go off. I dressed for walking, then typed about one page before printing the letter and preparing it for mailing. There was still time for stretches and resistance bands before putting the letter in the mailbox and meeting Joyce at her driveway at 8. I told her that my arm began to go numb, because I was typing without stopping, and the angle was not good.
Later in the day I checked the video clips from the porch cam to see if the mail had come. I saw neighbors come and go, most in cars, but one on a motorcycle. Another neighbor walked Patches, her dog, and they showed up. A large truck delivered propane across the street, and a FedEx van turned around in my driveway. I never saw the car that usually delivers the mail, so I went out to check, anyway. To my surprise, I had mail! Not only did I have mail, but my outgoing letter was under the junk mail!
I am still wondering who delivered the mail without the movement triggering the camera. Surely it couldn’t have been a drone!! There is no drone that could open my very stiff mailbox door, which is not easy for me to do. Anyone walking on the street would have been recorded. I’m not going to solve the mystery by sitting here and wondering. Any suggestions???
No suggestions on why the mail delivery did not show up, but perhaps a substitute mail person who did not see the flag or the letter in the box was the reason your letter was not collected?

I have many penpals and often will cut and paste parts of my diary entries to form a good part of my letter, when I do a fresh letter each month the first one takes the longest time the rest is a matter of cutting and pasting and added personal stuff as in commenting on what was written to me.

Sounds like an excellent way to work.

Yes. I don’t think that applies to a mechanical device like a motion-sensitive camera. Who knows? Maybe our machines are becoming more human!

I think so too, Kate.

I don’t know who brought it but I hope a better carrier comes next time. I share your frustration when an outgoing letter doesn’t go out.

Our mail system does have problems..The other day I was short two stamps and needed the two envelopes to go out so…I made a note and put the right amount of money in a small envelope thinking they would attach the stamps….no..the nexday with the regular mail was the envelope with two stamps in it..Have no ideaif the stamp less mail got to where it was suppose to go.Must have been a sub..my regular mail carrier would have known what to do.

You have your own set of mysteries with the postal service!

They just raised postage to $0.78 so you should hope for better service. I got three pieces of next door’s mail the same day … I only had four envelopes and the one that was mine was junk mail.

Maybe they know I bought lots of extra stamps before the price went up.

You were smart. I send very little mail and I am on the same book of Forever stamps that I’ve had for a while. I never heard about this new postage increase until the day it began!

Daughter Kate told me about the rate increase, so I bought a bunch ahead. I use one stamp a week.

I used to pay more attention when I worked as Pitney Bowes did not always send notices for the meter, so I’d e-mail Robb to tell him. I heard that the postage has gone up seven times in the last decade … fun fact that is not so fun if you routinely send cards/mail. I use Jacquie Lawson now for cards, even for Christmas, except my friend Ann Marie as she sends a paper card to me for each holiday/birthday, so I send to her.

I would not have known about the increase in postage if Kate had not told me.

Sometimes a doorbell camera can miss quick stops like mail delivery if the person moves fast, the motion settings aren’t sensitive enough, or the zones aren’t set just right. Wi-Fi hiccups or random app glitches can also cause the camera to miss someone who’s in and out really quickly.

Good points. I look for the clip of the mail car almost everyday, and I usually see it.

Do you have a flag on your mailbox to put up so the mail person knows to take the mail inside the box? If so, did you put it up and did they put it down? I can’t figure why they didn’t show up on your camera but if they put the flag down it seems they would have taken the mail.

2 weeks in a row the red flag was up on the mailbox, and the letter inside was not taken. Other mail was put on top of it.

Sounds like a new letter carrier who doesn’t know the job.
