As I walked to the stop sign, I checked one message on my phone, making sure I hadn’t missed neighbor Joyce. I ignored the next 24 messages, figuring it was just people chatting. When I came back, Joyce intercepted me at her driveway. She asked, “Did you see the messages about the skunk going under your porch?”
She told me the facts, and I resolved to look at clumps of messages next time. Neighbor Julie joined Joyce and me as she walked Patches. She has had dogs skunked before, and she said a skunk can’t spray again for two weeks!
I went home and read every word of those texts. Shawn saw Izzy go into my yard and chase the skunk. She called it a plump skunk. She was relieved when the dog turned back. The next message said, “Oh, no! Too late! Izzy got skunked again!”
I found this on the internet: “Skunks can spray up to six times in succession if they feel threatened, but they only have a limited amount of spray and it can take them up to 10-14 days to replenish their scent glands.”

Rabies is where my mind went.
In all my years of living in the country, I have never seen a rabid skunk though.

We had a very sick skunk in the neighborhood a few years ago. It finally died on Joyce’s driveway. Neighbor Bob got rid of it for her.

Getting rid of the skunk smell once a dog has been sprayed is not easy. I know from experience. It lingers for days.

Izzie went home with her head down, as if she had done something wrong. Shawn was trying to comfort her without getting too close.

Poor girl. She knew she smelled bad. Apparently tomato juice helps get the smell out, but bathing a dog in tomato juice is never fun or easy.

It’s no fun at all washing a dog that got sprayed by a skunk. The house will smell for weeks!

Yup, been there and done that. I use Nature’s Miracle Skunk shampoo…can’t remember the full name. Nothing gets all the smell out, but that’s a good start. There are lots of home remedies on the web as well.

Thank you for that info. I don’t have a dog, but three households do. Last night neighbor Joyce saw 3 skunks run across the street and onto her property. She immediately let everyone know.

It would take a LOT of tomato juice in a bathtub to get rid of the odor. I had one walk directly across my path on the high school track one morning about 4 AM. I stopped and let it pass because I wondered how I could drive the mile home and shower before work. You must have a cozy spot under the porch. We have resident garden snakes under the stone steps to our porch. Nature is so fascinating. oxox
