The dental hygienist rinsed my mouth out thoroughly, saying the chemical she had used did not taste good. She did such a good job that I didn’t taste anything at all. I began to think of things that I found repulsive and couldn’t think of one for several minutes. Radishes popped into my mind, and that is a taste I can live without. John liked them and was always glad to find them in a restaurant salad.
Then there was the time I ordered meatloaf in a good restaurant in Asheville and could hardly swallow it. I asked the server if there was lamb in it. He checked with the chef, and yes, there was ground lamb and ground beef in it. I knew what to do then – take it home and let John have it. He loved lamb, but he didn’t like that meatloaf. Would you agree that an unusual ingredient should be mentioned on the menu? I would have avoided that dish if I had known it was contaminated with lamb.
Messy foods can be amusing, too. I reheated one of the four hamburgers I had cooked on the grill. When I opened the package of buns, I found I had taken hot dog buns out of the freezer instead of hamburger buns. Easy fix, or so I thought. I cut one in half and assembled the burger on it. The first bite pushed the meat out the other side, so I took the second bite from the back. The mustard went this way and that, mostly falling on the plate. What a mess! It wouldn’t have been bad if I’d brought utensils out to the porch, but I used my fingers followed by two napkins. What is the messiest food you’ve ever eaten? Did anybody laugh?
I never order meat loaf because I don’t know what’s in it. I like most things (not lamb!) but I’m fussy about seasonings. There is one chain that is known for their Italian food and I can’t eat their spaghetti because their sauce is very spice (at least for me). Sometimes we have to make do with rolls too, mostly cutting a hot dog in half to get in a burger roll!

No lamb for me either!!!

I don’t think I have ever cut a hot dog to fit a hamburger bun. I’ve certainly done the opposite a number of times.

I’ve cut sausage to fit a burger bun too. Seems like I forget to get the long buns.

We are good at substitutions, though.

I have had pretty much these same experiences. I don’t like lamb either. Older sheep meat known as mutton, tastes rotten (IMO). lol

I wonder if I would have liked lamb if I grew up eating it. I am almost positive my mother never cooked lamb.

When I was about six, we went to a church dinner. Mom had me try some mutton because I had never eaten it. It was an experience I never forgot. It was NASTY!!

I’ll take your word for it. Don’t need to try it.

Oh!! I’ll have to introduce you to my messiest food…my Wax Paper Sandwich! I invented it way back when, but just can’t seem to get anyone interested in mass producing it.🤣🤣🤣🤣

I am with you on radishes I never could develop a taste for them. Lamb in meatloaf. Yuck. I have never heard of such a thing.
I cannot eat anything with gluten. I found some gluten free hamburger buns that I like, but I have close to the same experience eating a hamburger on them as you had eating yours on a hotdog bun. I now eat my burgers using a knife and fork because I do love hamburgers.
I think the gluten free hamburgers are probably the messiest food I have eaten. Juice was running down my arms to my elbows. Yes, I laughed about both of our messy burgers. Thanks for giving me a laugh.

No foods really bother me…yet… but -yes- yuck on the lamb and the juice running down your arm!! 🤣🤣🤣

Sounds like you needed a shower after eating your juicy burger! That is amusing.

I almost did. I grabbed a paper towel and caught the juice as it ran down my arms. I did wash my arms after finishing the burger.

I have experienced mutton(🤮) but not lamb. I’ve watched lamb chops be cooked on tv and the LOOK delicious but I am scared now to try after the mutton 🤣

Don’t order lamb in a restaurant, because you’ll have to pay for it. Try it in someone’s home if it is served to you. You just might like it. John and his family certainly did. It should be served with mint jelly, and that could help you choke it down.

good morning Anne. When I think of messy foods I think of my late husband on a trip to New Orleans. We both both loved Seafood and the look on his face was a joy to behold when his very big meal arrived. He was further enchanted when they put a bib on him. But the bib was very necessary because of the mess he made.

Did he have lobster? It’s traditional to wear a bib to eat that. New Orleans is known for other messy seafood dishes.

My father, who was/is German never ate anything with his fingers, just with knife and fork. Just after I graduated from using a toddler spoon to real silverware, I was told by him that I had to eat with knife and fork, no matter how long it took. Mom intervened, but he was adamant. Mom didn’t allow elbows on the table, so there I was, elbows in the air like wings, but abiding by the rules. He ate everything, including corn on the cob, pizza, KFC, even a hotdog, with knife and fork.
I don’t remember a messy episode with me. My mom and I would go for ribs at a place called “The Boneyard” – it was wonderful and each meal was a plate of ribs, a hunk of garlic toast, sliced/fried potatoes and a green onion laid neatly across the top. They’d come with Wet Wipes. 🙂 In later years, we patronized Applebees and had their “Riblets” – no muss, no fuss and a simple dab of the lips and fingers was all you needed to be presentable again.

The knife and fork rule must have been daunting for you.
Is Applebee’s still in business? I used to pass one on the way to church, but I don’t drive by there anymore.

Our one we went to in Southgate is open – it was when I passed by a couple of months ago. I always hear radio ads that they are revamping their menu. I’ve not been there since 2008 so it is probably really different. I did like their Riblets and those little Onion Peels.

We used to go to Chili’s too … then an Applebee’s was built, so it was closer and same type of Southwest-inspired menu, so that was it for Chili’s.

John didn’t like Southwest foods, so he never went to Chili’s. I went once with a girlfriend a long time ago.

My mom wasn’t keen on it either – too spicy, so she always got something tamer, but discovering the Riblets was the gamechanger.

P.S. – Yes, the knife and fork for a little kid was unnecessary, that’s for sure. But yes, I learned how to eat with knife and fork, so that was good, but unnecessary for such a little kid. I had just “graduated” from having Mom cut up my food for me.

You make me smile, Anne!! Anything I eat with my hands🌮 is a mess! Somehow I still drop lettuce from a sandwich or watermelon – and whatever else – on my shirt😄. Fun post!

I actually like lamb. It was common in South Africa and a roast leg of lamb was the normal Sunday dinner. I think it might be like a number of foods that taste good or not, depending on how it is prepared, and of course, the fact that we do have unique preferences. I have served a braised lamp chop, seasoned with North African spices which is very tasty. Son and I like it, but Randy does not care for lamb just because he does not. Two awful experiences of food was the first and only time I tried calamari and the first and only time I tried conch fritters. Both tasted like old rubber to me. I spit out the calamari, but managed to swallow the conch fritter, but declined to have any more!

John’s mother cooked leg of lamb fairly regularly, and I think the family members all liked it. I have had lamb occasionally when it was well done and could swallow it without making a face. Given a choice, I’d never eat it again.

It is hard to imagine your being in a situation where you had no choice, so I suspect you will never have to again. 😢

I had to eat lamb at a few family dinners. Everyone knew John loved it, and I was happy for him to enjoy it. You are right, it is not likely to happen again.
