A Continuation of Music

Having just played ALL our Christmas CD’s, I decided to continue listening to general music. This time I’m playing the discs that I collected through the years. I haven’t played them since I moved here eleven years ago. There was music in the house during those years, mostly John’s playing his music. That was fine, since I liked nearly everything he played.

I just put one disc in the reject pile. It was a trio, three women playing music for violin, cello, and piano. There were three selections on the disc, and only one was bearable. The others were modern and screechy. I must have bought it myself, but I wonder why.

Continuing with the following disc, I found myself listening to ocean waves on a beach. I knew what was coming. I unexpectedly reveled in it! The CD player was in the kitchen, and I was in the living room, typing on the computer. It was easy to imagine I was sitting inside, listening to waves crashing on a nearby stretch of sand. I enjoyed the rhythmic, foaming sound, even though I never heard that sound except in hot weather. My imagination was helped by wearing three layers of clothing, which kept me warm on a very cold day.

  1. I loved this, Anne. One of my favorite tapes in the day of cassettes was the sound of a sailboat creaking on waters, with the waves hitting the hull and gulls or terns in the background. I spent time today listening to Gregorian Chants, and then used the experience to complete my writing assignment for today for the new class I started Saturday.

  2. Many years ago I had a AM/FM Radio Shack radio headset I wore to do all my outside chores and I’d have it turned up and be singing to the music. Sometimes my mom would come to the front door and get my attention and say “Linda, I can hear you singing in the house, over the lawn mower.” I loved that radio and it had some other features like some buttons to press for soothing sounds, like a babbling brook, waves crashing at the seashore, rainfall, birds singing and a train rolling on railroad tracks. There was nothing nicer than at the end of a long workday than to put that headset on after climbing into bed. I’d be lulled to sleep within minutes.

      1. I’d still have it except the big puffy earpads that cushioned your ears began to fall apart – little pieces of black stuff and I didn’t want it going in my ears. I ordered new earpads from Radio Shack online as the store had already closed due to bankruptcy. I’d have bought more of those headsets had I known of Radio Shack’s demise – they weren’t expensive either.

  3. Anne, it’s wonderful that the music carried you away – it does feel like a blessing. Enjoying the delights of the summer warmth and ocean during the midst of winter! For my last birthday I received a turntable for my old LPs and I’ve had fun playing through them. There is so much emotional history attached to them. Happy Listening!

    1. I still have our record collection and a machine that would play them. At this moment, I don’t intend to play them. I would probably scratch them, since I can’t see well in dark places. I know you will enjoy your collection.

  4. I have a drawerful, and I somehow still get the urge to visit the thrift stores and bring home more CD treasures for 99 cents. Right now, as I write this I am listening to a new/old one, country music hits, 1965 – 69, Roger Miller is singing ‘King of the Road,’ to me at the moment, and Johnny and June just finished serenading me with ‘Jackson’. I hope to listen to everything again this year. I’m enjoying swaying as I use the keyboard. I’m not a good dancer, but I sway back and forth pretty well.
