Broken Clouds

My telephone showed the time in huge numbers, the date in a much smaller font, and the weather in tiny letters. It was the weather that caught and held my eyes. It said, “18° Broken Clouds”. Only the words on my phone struck me. If the clouds are broken, who broke them and will they fall on me? Being a child of the 20th Century, I know there is much more to “sky” than clouds and an expanse of blue. There is space out there, lots of space! There is debris in space that is falling toward us. I’m happy to report that I glanced at an article that said we now have the capability of intercepting things falling out of the sky. Whew! I’m not going to worry about broken clouds anymore.

  1. I’ve never heard that phrase before. All kinds of crazy words coming up now – “frost quakes” comes up occasionally in this bitter cold weather. Little explosions underground and now “trees exploding” because their sap freezes and the inside of the tree expands and pushes the bark off.

      1. Our Detroit area lineman went down South, 60 of them, to help out and likely will be in Tennessee under this reciprocal agreement they have. When we had the bad ice storm in 2023, our City and surrounding areas had linemen from Tennessee. Some residents felt sorry for them as they weren’t used to the extreme cold and gave them hot drinks and baked goods and even snacks as they were so happy to see them pull up in their trucks.

      1. I have been wondering. Weather.gov might have the amount of snow. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, a piece of printer paper is about 8″ X 11″. Try seeing if you roll it into a tube, if it disappears at the 8″ side, you have more snow. A ruler or yardstick will also do the trick. Stay warm. Are there plows to clear the roads?
