How I wished for neighbor Joyce, my local nature interpreter! She would love to have seen the fox I spotted on my morning walk. It appeared on the road above the small RV park and ran up the steep hill, white-tipped tail flowing behind. My hand did not move toward the cell phone, because I knew I’d miss the action if I tried to catch it. What a beautiful sight! It’s marvelous to see a healthy animal in its element, moving with a fluid grace.
I did consult my Washington state naturalist about prints beside the road. I thought they were made by a horse wearing horseshoes. He said I was right. Although I see horses in the pasture behind my house, they are never ridden here.
How wonderful. We had a family of foxes living in the abandoned lemon grove across the street from us. I loved to watch the little ones play with each other.

How fun to see a fox on your walk. I hear them hear, at night, but I have not seen one.

It had been light for about an hour when I spotted the fox.

Such a lovely area to walk and live with animals around to watch. Glad you didn’t miss the moment reaching for your phone camera.

Seeing the fox was exciting for me. Usually neighbor Joyce has to point to things for me to see them .

They are beautiful to see, but we don’t like them in our neighborhood because they steal chickens.

Foxes got several of Bob’s and Shawn’s chickens. They gave up keeping chickens.

They are beautiful animals with their black “socks” and bushy tails. I was lucky to see my first one a couple of years ago at Lake Erie Metropark. They have the funniest noise they make, not a bark, more like a human laugh.

I’ve never identified the sound of a fox. Maybe I’ve never heard one.

They have different noises, from a high-pitched squeal, to what sounds like a barking dog. There was a local story in northern Michigan I believe where the male and female foxes would be screaming at each other to attract a mate and this mating call was so loud that a neighbor called the police as they thought a woman was screaming.
