Daughter Kate, grandson David, and I were relaxing on the final day of Kate’s stay. David would put up his hanging seat each time we sat on the porch, keeping it clean from perching birds. Kate has no place to sit outside her home in NJ, so she enjoyed both porches when it was warm enough here.

The next day Kate stopped in the street after backing out of the driveway and offered to pose for her parting photo. Bless her, she knows how I love pictures and knew I’d want a going-away shot. When I told her I’d left my phone charging in the kitchen, she handed me hers! What a thoughtful daughter!! She sent the picture to me after she got home.

Our lives returned to normal, leaving us with lovely memories. At the end of the week, David and I resumed our Friday routine of eating together and shopping for food. I totally forgot to take a photo of us at the restaurant, so David agreed to a selfie at my house. He, too, knows how much I love family pictures.

There was an event at the supermarket that I want to record, because I thought it was so impressive. David has a personal budget of $100 for food. Each week he keeps a running total in his head as he put things in his cart. There were several times he was under budget, and once or twice he went a few dollars over. That day I watched as his total grew closer and closer to the $100 mark. I was holding my breath for the total. Yes!! The total was $99.74!!! I congratulated him, and he just smiled. I couldn’t add two numbers and keep the total in my head while picking out a third item. He had a cart full of food and KNEW he was near the goal!!
What a nice end to a lovely week!

Cute photo of you and David!

That’s amazing that he got that close. I try to do that sometimes – always rounding up to the nearest dollar. After the third item usually forget where I was.

I’m sure it’s a good exercise to add things in your head, but it doesn’t work for me.

To David, it isn’t work. It’s a challenge.

Wow, David does really well keeping those prices in his head. And by the way he made a good choice taking down his swinging seat. Not good if birds decide to use it. It sounds like you two had a great visit with Kate. Nice photos.

Thank you. It was a very low-key visit that we all enjoyed.

Years ago those little red “clickers” were popular for keeping a running total in the supermarket and I can remember my mom using one. You kept adding the price of the item to your total – it worked well, except if you were in a hurry and couldn’t remember if you added it or not. You two are good at taking a selfie.

David is the selfie king. My arms are not long enough.

A fellow blogger is very petite so she has the same problem as you – she has to use a selfie stick as she often takes pictures of her family (husband and two kids) to use in her blog.

Family photos are the best. Good for David sticking to a budget. I add as I go along too. Sometimes something has to go back on the shelf.

It has been many years since I took something out of my grocery cart and put it back on the shelf. My grocery lists are more carefully crafted now .

I used to play a game with Bruce. When we got the cart up to the checkout, I would guess the total and Bruce would guess either lower or higher. I usually won. Mine would be the closest. Bruce was always surprised. Unlike David, I didn’t keep a running total in my head. With my dyslexia, it is hard for me to add numbers, they move around or change. But somehow, having a general idea of all the prices as we put things into the cart, I could come up with the total within a few dollars. I always thought that was really cool.

Yes, you have a cool way of guessing the total cost of a cart full of groceries. I’m not dyslexic, but numbers slide around in my head, too.
