My Overnight Guest

Gradually the people who helped move neighbors Shawn and Bob went home, and all was quiet. Shawn said she and Bob noticed some things that needed attention when the furniture was out of the house. They were going to fix those things and go spend the night with family. I didn’t look outside until I went out to walk the next morning. My guest was there in the driveway! Bob had asked for permission to park his truck and the trailer there. They couldn’t be left on the property that was no longer theirs.

Bob did a great job of parking, getting the truck and trailer well to one side. It’s likely both will be gone before I need to get my car out. Meanwhile, my property looks like busy people live here. That’s not a bad image to project if nosy people come looking at houses that were/are for sale on this street.

I just realized it’s marvelous that I didn’t have to feed my guest. Can you imagine how much it would cost to fill up that truck?

    1. I heard the truck leave as I was playing the piano late this afternoon. I wish I’d heard them come so I could have waved at them. Fog is a fixture every morning and burns off about the time I get home from walking.

      1. I’d never schedule anything in the morning then … I only had to drive in the fog once and it was enough. I had scheduled my former car to have a leak taken care of and had an 8:00 a.m. appointment the day after Thanksgiving. It was pea soup fog and all the people on the road for their Black Friday deals … thankfully it was less than a mile to drive there.

          1. We don’t get fog too much – Fall and Spring mostly. I never drove to work, except a few times if I had to leave early and one Summer when the bus system went on strike. I caught the bus at the end of the street, so I just walked to catch it and never had to even take the car out of the garage.

              1. Yes, it was, which is why I never honed my Winter driving skills. I drove to school at Henry Ford Community College … so I did alright then, but when I switched to Wayne State University, I took the bus to Downtown Detroit, then caught a City bus to school – there were three City bus lines I could take, a 10-minute ride, so it was easy and cheaper as well. When I worked at the diner, it is a 1/2 mile away and on really snowy days, my boss Erdie would come and pick me up (I started at 6:45 a.m. every weekend – full time in the Summer). Then I walked home. So I was spoiled. We had a horrible storm the day of my grandmother’s funeral. It started right after we started for home (240-mile trip). We followed behind a snowplow on Highway 401 for a very long time. Our four-hour trip took us twice as long and my car was a Pacer, very lightweight and fishtailed constantly. I babied myself driving in snow after that.
