When warm weather came this year, I intended to have watermelon several times. I knew David loved it. The first melon we had was too large, but we managed to squeeze it into the refrigerator. It lasted a bit too long for my liking. Several weeks ago I looked for small watermelons and found none. The supermarket didn’t have any at all, and the local produce stand had only big ones. This week Ingles, our favorite supermarket, advertised personal melons. Perfect!

David had a long day at work. After he came home, he ate the main course, and I listed his choices of fruit to have. At the mention of melon, his eyes lit up. As I pulled it from the refrigerator, he said he could eat the whole thing. I cut it in half, and he sliced that half in about 18 pieces. That turned out to be plenty.

When he had eaten the red part, he reassembled the outer shell on the plate. Yes, we do silly things just for the fun of it.

He and I often take things too far. He wanted to see if he could pick up the pieces and flip them over, and I took the video. Unfortunately, the file was too big, so I saved five frames from the video to show you.
I think we can consider summer closed for business now. It’s time for squash and pumpkins.

We love butternut squash. John likes it so much that he offers to cut up the squash. He cuts, and I cook. We don’t want to squash our team!

You are so lucky! My husband doesn’t like any squash (and very few vegetables) so I either make a small portion for myself or order it out.

John and David love veggies. I’d just as soon have fruit. We don’t come to blows over food, though.

I love watermelon, but squash and pumpkin season is my favorite!

I agree with you. Watermelon is wonderful on a hot summer day, but give me crisp leaves and cool temps to enjoy squash.

LOL. How was the flavor? Sometimes those little ones taste a bit flat. Especially the “seedless” ones.

David was desperate enough for watermelon that it didn’t matter if it wasn’t the best. He ate that half all by himself. Maybe he will share some with Grandpa tonight. Whatever is left, David can enjoy for the next two days while John is at the train club.

David going into practice now for the Great Squash and Great Pumpkin Turnovers?

David finds fun things to do with whatever is at hand. We don’t usually eat squash and pumpkin from the rind, so I doubt David will be able to make turnovers from them.

Tell David to enjoy his watermelon until hats and gloves are needed in NC, then he must switch to gourds. 🙂

David, in his quiet way, makes people smile. I’ll bet he is going to grin when he sees how much watermelon is left.

It looks like a little watermelon amphitheater for tiny performers. Too fun.

We probably have some Lego people that would have fit in the watermelon shell.

I bought a watermelon two weeks ago and after cutting it open it turned out to be rotten inside. I decided right there and than that summer had officially died!

RIP, Summer! I left a watermelon on the counter until it fermented and began weeping. We eat them quicker now.
