Pisgah Inn

A family favorite is eating at Pisgah Inn on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We always take a photo inside to show that we have a fantastic view of mountains and clouds, although they never show up clearly. For that matter, we don’t show up well, either. It just proves we were there enjoying ourselves.

After eating, we went out to the viewing deck to admire the scenery and take photos. Daughter Lise is good at selfies. The wind is always blowing and was rearranging our hair that day.

I thought it would be fun to record Lise’s taking a selfie and the resultant photo.

I don’t see well, so I didn’t notice cause and effect didn’t match. Sharp-eyed people might see that in one she is wearing a jacket, and in the other she isn’t. Both were taken the same day near the parkway, one at Pisgah Inn and the other at an overlook. Would you have noticed if I hadn’t told you?

There was joy in being together there, with no hint of sorrow. I never thought about closure until I looked at the date of the photos. It was ten months to the day after John, grandson David, and I had reservations to eat at the inn. Making a call to cancel was the first thing I did after the hospital told me John had died. Our being there in April was fulfilling a desire a different group of three had in June. David and I thank John for thinking of it and Lise for making it happen. Life goes on, still filled with joy from God.

  1. What a sweet post, Anne. It is good to carry on. I did not notice the jacket/shirt difference, but I thought the sky looked different in the second photo. I was stuck on looking at the sky and how pretty Lise’s hair looked, and the fact that all three of you have such lovely smiles.

  2. Funny-in a strange way. I remember you saying that fateful day, that you had some cancellations to make. Now I know this was one of them. So happy you three were able to make a joyful family memory together. ❌⭕️

  3. It looks like a fun outing. I did notice the jacket and later no jacket but thought perhaps it had got warmer during the day. It’s wonderful that you can think of John with a smile. xo

        1. I was almost afraid to go to Colorado, fearing I would love the Rockies more than the Smokies. There was no reason to fear. The Smokies won my heart long ago, though I’ll say the Rockies are most impressive and awe-inspiring.

          1. The Rockies are very awe-inspiring. Unfortunately, with how much fire ravaged there is in Colorado, some areas look very bleak. That and the beetle kill trees make the mountains look like something out of Mordor (J. J. R. Tolkien, “The Lord of the Rings”). It is very sad to see.

              1. This has happened in the last five or so years. When we first moved to Colorado, over 26 years ago, the fires weren’t as bad and I don’t think the beetles had been imported yet.

                  1. If you just went to the Rocky Mountain National Park area, then you wouldn’t have seen the acres of burn scars and the swaths of dead trees. We tended to wonder about the state a bit since we lived there.

                    1. I’d have to look at photos and blog posts to find out where we were. We went to a family wedding in the highest town in the state, and we stayed with college friends out from Denver.

      1. I laughed, because you rarely make mistakes. I could figure out what you meant, though, and that’s the point of communicating. I’ve made some awful bloopers — some blamed on fingers and some on eyesight.

  4. I did notice the difference in Lise’s outfit. She is very photogenic. It is wonderful to hear that you are still finding joy in life even after the loss of John. You are an inspiration.

  6. What a lovely post and time with your family, Anne. It sounds like a cozy inn for a meal and great views all round. All of you certainly had fun taking selfies. I did notice your daughter was wearing a jacket in one and not the other photo, but both photos are beautiful with the blue sky and mountains in the background 🙂

    1. It was early in the season, so the inn was not as busy as in summer. The view from the dining room is nearly always great. We were never there on a rainy or foggy day. Once we watched white clouds drifting by below us.

I did notice the different outfit but I can’t say it made me wonder what was going on. Your pictures are alway so special. Thanks for all that you do!

  8. I remember you have been here before and the stunning background. I like what you wrote at the conclusion of the post and as I began reading this post and the venue, I pictured you and John there – was it around a Flag Day holiday – I think you were both in red, white and blue and if memory serves me right that is your wedding anniversary.
